hmmm. interesting. maybe someone private will step up and build their own private strip? should make it 2 or 3 times as long, and really see what some of these cars can do. granted, the price will be insane.

You have no idea how much it costs to build an airstrip. My company is building a private airport here in austin and our inspecting part of the build is almost 100k. The dirt contractors contract is a tad over a million and we arent even talking about the concrete to pour the runway. The typical private airport runway is 6000 ft by 100ft wide and a minimum of 6" thick, thats over half a million in concrete cost without even counting placing and finishing the concrete. And thats only for a 6000ft runway, what you would need for a mile contest would need to be twice that for staging and shutdown besides the actual mile of WOT area. I seriously doubt a private person has the dough to bankroll a project like that for relativley small gain. The only reason the mile has worked so far is the navy built it then gave it away for a 1$ otherwise there wouldnt even be this event. Its sad to say but if they do take it the mile contest here in Texas will be a thing of the past. I dont know of any other venue around here that has 10000+ ft of smooth level surface and would be open to this kind of event. Commercial runways are long enough but I doubt they would let of a bunch of drunk gear heads loose on one of their runways for the weekend.

Cody there's lots of airstrips that will rent their property out for a day. Some of them military some of them under private ownership some of them public, it's not impossible to find one. You make it seem like it's the end of the world.
There's currently 3 three other "mile races" going on right now in this country spread out at each corner of the U.S. All it takes is for someone to organize it and front the capital and you'll have another texas mile, it'll just be somewhere else.

Problem is finding one long enough in the Texas area that will rent it out. If they were so easily available dont you think it wouldve been done before 03?

Private air strips arent built long enough is my point. Private airstrips generally are only built 6000ft long, you need 8000(minimum since the TX mile is 8K and fast cars are having problems shutting down) for this type of event and thats pushing it VERY close.

None of the commercial airports in Texas are going to let a bunch of people go out there and race their cars. Austins isnt setup for it, nor is love field. Possibly intercontinental in Houston but thats one of teh busiest airports in the world so I dont see them giving up a runway.

As far as I know, the military installation that allow private citizens on base for these types of events are "mothballed" installations. Not to mention Im sure the cost would go up significantly, as it stands now for a little over 3 bills you can go out there for 3 days and make unlimited passes. Pretty hard to beat IMO.
