Default Electric Trailer Brake Controllers

I need to add a brake controller to my 99 Silverado. I DONT have the towing package, which means no Limited slip diff, no receiver hitch and no 7 pin light plug on the rear.

I'm adding the 7 pin plug (there is wiring there on the vehicle for the plug) and the hitch, but I want to know what is involved for the brake controller.

Ones I have looked at, it appears something plugs into the fuse block under the hood, I'm assuming thats what tells the controller when you hit the brakes?

Looks like you need to run 12v to the controler, and then a blue wire to the 7 pin connector on the rear that actually energizes the trailer brakes.

Please educate me on what is required to add the controler and give any tips on brands/features to look for when buying them.

I'm not sure with your year model and the fact that it didn't come with the towing package. On our 06 Silverado that we had, had the towing package. When we added electric brake controller, I mounted the box on the lower dash to the right near the center console. The wiring connected to a fuse block under the dash near the brake pedal. We got out brake controller from tractor supply, and was wired with a connector that was a direct plug & Play to the block under the dash.

As far as the wiring for the trailer lights, there should be a light block at the rear of the truck, both rear taillights and a space for trailer lights there.

Don't know if that helps any at all.
