Default crack in tail light

tried to get my car back on the road today, but was thwarted by the guy doing the inspection. said i couldnt have tape on my tail lights. this is on a grand marquis and the tape was barely visible.i told him that tape had been the for the las 4 years and for the last 4 years i had gotten it inspected there. then i asked ..what, does it need to be red. he says no, you cant have any tape at all. then i flew off the handle. does anybody know if the red tape is kosher for inspections.and if its illegal, why the hell do they sell the **** to begin with. yet another rant. ill try a different shop tomorrow.

I've had 2 people come into my store complaining about the exact same thing. Must be getting tighter inspection restrictions on tail lights?
