Default Calling CA residents

I have 2 questions.

Background before question. A dear friend's son, from TN, went to college in CA, he graduated, got married, and then got a job offer there. He is in the bay area, I was told. Still waiting on the exact location, I think Morgan Hill, California. He is now looking for a new vehicle to suit his job a little better.

First- Related to emission and safety, if we find him a vehicle here and drive it to him, what issue's would there be with CA strict laws. I know CA sells CA only vehicles from most manufactures.

Second - Would someone near him be willing to inspect a vehicle for me. He knows nearly nothing about vehicles, he is 24 and this will be his first purchases on his own.

He is being pressured to buy a $15,000 Ford Explorer. For the moment, we have him in a holding pattern, but he is chomping at the bit. We are trying to get him in the $6-7000 range so he wont have a monster monthly payment on top of his already monster rent he was talked into.

He currently has a Ford Taurus, which he likes, but it is wrecked. He wouldn't mind something along the lines of it, or a explorer sized SUV.

Can anyone help me?

If you're going to have him go with an explorer type suv, look for a late model ford escape. I think they run a bit better than the explorer and have only a fractional loss in interior space, and shouldn't be too expensive.

For 15000 he could have a really sweet truck so... finding a ford for cheap shouldn't be much of a problem

If you buy an out of state vehicle and want to register it in cali, you will either have to buy it with CA. emissions already installed or must install CA. emissions to it, which will most likely negate the savings.

That is what I was wondering.

So we need to focus on a CA vehicle.

Is anyone near him that would be able to help him shop?
