Default auto lights help

I'm having a problem with my automatic lights on my truck. (2002 silverado) When I'm driving at night my truck will randomly ding and my lights will turn off, i can flip the switch and my lights will come on but to get the sutomatic lights to come back on i have to turn the truck off and start it back up. What could be causing it to do that? I was thinking the sensor on the dash going bad but it doesn't ding when the lights go on or off normally. Any ideas? thanks guys

Could be the dome light override switch giving you problems or the E-brake sensor down there. Either one can turn off the auto-on feature of the headlights.

I've never heard a ding when using my dome override, but the 99's are a completely different monster (different headlight, dome override, bcm, etc). I have heard a ding with my e-brake on...did you happen to notice if the brake light comes on the dash? Just curious.

99s don't have the auto headlight off feature via the dome override button. My 2000 dings when I press the dome override button 3 times.

If you are hearing the 'ding' noise when they go out, I have to believe that the dome override switch is on the fritz.
