I need to get one. I don't know a thing about them. Whats better down or synthetic? What brands are good?

I have a few field classes that I have to go to that will require me to spend some weekends in remote areas looking at formations. One class requires me to spend as much a two weeks in the middle of the Mojave Desert in early January.

I don't know much about them but I do know that synthetic is better. Two good brands are Kelty and Northface. You can get cheaper ones that will do the job. It just depends on what you're looking for. Make sure to check the temperature rating before you buy one. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Synthetic & down both have their advantages/disadvantages. Down can be stuffed into a smaller sack, seems like it is a little lighter than synthetic from what I remember also because you need less material for the same warmth rating. Downside: Usually more costly & if they get the least bit wet they lose much of their warmth. Synthetic resists moisture, but you still dont want to get it soaked. For your needs, I would probably get a Cat's Meow by North Face(Synthetic). It is rated to 15* & is fairly inexpensive($160 or so). It is an all around good bag that a lot of people use. How cold does it get where you are staying?

Im thinking of going with Kelty's Light Year 3D because its available in a ridiculously large size (I am 6'8'' so fitment is an issue) the price is right and with the temp range I should be able to use it year round with the addition or subtraction of other blankets. The only problem is that it is hideous beyond reason.

Well I ordered the bag today. I'm going "in the field" this weekend so I need the bag by Friday. I had to pay the 2-day to guarantee it by Friday. I hate spending money on non-mods. Like rent. That one gets me every time.
