Default 99 5.3 vs 00 5.9

okay so ive got a friend with a 2000 dodge rcsb 5.9 ram...dude before him had it supercharged so he left the bigger injectors and i think its still tuned for thr charger...hes got midlength headers and going to have 3" borla from the cat back cause he still has cats so im thinkin he will lose some low end with the 3" but gain some up high...but he also doesnt have a y pipe...its a true dual system with cats anyways ive got a 99 5.3 with single in/dual out dumped and im pretty sure that the guy before me had the truck tuned but he did not take out the speed limiter..or maybe i have a freak engine because im stock other than exhaust and ive beaten rcsb hemis and can keep up with mustang gts...i also ran a 15.24 @ full weight...i didnt take out the passsenger seat or tailgate or spare tire or rear bumper or anything...but it is a rcsb stepside and ive heard stepside weighs about 200 pounds less than fleet but is that true? doesnt matter right now but do you think i will win? he says his engine is rated at 280 horse and mine is only rated at 270 but we all know the story on dodges powertrain loss...he thinks his truck is about a mid 14 second truck but im thinkin with the mods he has and most likely more weight than me that he shouldnt be...were supposed to race this weekend and im thinking it will come down to the driving? im thinkin im going to pull him off the line but he will have better high end...i seem to have immense power down low but it blows higher up ...suggestions on way to beat him? i might take out my passenger seat cause on one will be riding with me anyways and i might lower my back tire pressure a bit but i just wanna know what you guys think? let me know

Factory freak! My cousins '00 rcsb stepside 5.3 Silverado was only able to run a 15.3X with weight reduction, single in dual out flowmaster, and no air filter.

Here is what I think will help you beat the Dodge....

1. Take out the air filter just before the race. That should help the engine breath better: more air = better top end power. (Dont forget to put it back in after the race.)

2. Lose some weight. (Spare tire, passanger seat, center console, tailgate, floormats) If your truck's rear gets too light and starts spinning off the line, put the spare or tailgate back on.

3. Take off the sway bar for better traction since your truck is gonna be alot lighter.

4. Get some leaf spring clamps (cheap), again for better traction.

5. Stall the truck to only 800-900rpm. Don't stall it over 1000rpm since the computer starts retarding timing and the truck will bogg off the line.

6. Get it on vid and post it on the multimedia section.

Now some info on the competition:

The '00 rcsb 5.9l Rams are only rated at 235hp and 330tq, but have a 4009lb curb weight (consumerguide) so they are lighter than I thought. (might be the weight of the v6 version though) According to the February of 1998 edition of Car and Driver magazine, the '98 SS/T (same specs as the '00 ram you will be racing) ran a 16.6 @ 83 to the 1/4 mile with an 8.4 second sprint to 60mph, but 32.9 seconds to 100mph, which lets us know that the 5.9's top end sucks... and thats where the LSXs shine. His full exhuast will help him alot up on top though.

Unless hes got something else hiding under the hood, I think you should beat him. Good luck, and let er rip!!!

up the air pressure in your front tires for less roling resistance. drop the rear pressure for more traction. aslo, if you have aftermarket rims ditch them for stockers, all the weight plus the power robbed to turn them will really hurt you.

You should beat him. I have a ecsb z71 and me and when me and ND RAM raced the first time, basically stock for stock, he had his moms 96 dodge indy ram with the 360 and flowmaster i had a k&n filter whoever got the jump won. But i also had 2 nitrous bottles and a toolbox full of tools also , and me and nd ram did have traction issues, we may rematch this weekend cause im getting new tires and i have tuned my truck up-it had 105k on it without a tune up when we races too. So you shouldnt have a prob with him considering how much lighter your truck is than mine...But you never know

Yeah we were both pretty damn close. The 5.9L has always been a torque motor, it's torque will surprise you, but they never had the HP of other motors . As already stated, the 5.9L wasn't nearly as fast as the new HEMI is but I have to question the 16.6s 1/4mi. I'm in basically a bone stock 1996 right now and I'm a lot closer to bottom 16s. Like 1979rs/z28 said, whoever got the jump when we raced, won. That part about him having a lot of extra weight though is not really a big deal b/c I was loaded too. I take it you're a 4X2? If so then you might end up fighting traction problems, like we did. If he has a peg-legger it could get ugly but if he has a Sure-Grip..he will hook! Let us know how it turns out.

Not that it is that big of a difference but the 5.9L was rated at 245hp, I believe that torque figure is right though.
