Thanks for the reply. Well I got time to think about it and plan. I came across this article in a old magazine. I think it would tow a f body nicely... what do you think?

My 05 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 and 3.73's pulled my Trans Am just fine on a open trailer. I haven't towed my Trans Am with my 09 silverado with a 5.3 and 3.73's yet. But I have towed my friends t/a to the track on a open trailer. I did it before I lifted it. It towed just fine.

I wouldnt bother build a 5.3. Just get a tune for it, maybe headers and a stall.

ive towed a lot heavier than a fbody with a 4.8 4wd truck. towed several older cars like my 66 buick with it on my 16 foot open trailer. it had no problem. this was from western in to eastern ky. truck only had exhaust. people worry about what they tow with way to much. a 4 banger s10 could pull a fbody.

My boss swears his 4.3 in his S10 will get the job done well. I just hate asking ppl to borrow their trucks. I rather have my own.

oh I understand not wanting to borrow a truck but about any truck will pull 4-5k behind. (this is excluding some of the crossovers like suvs, el caminos, or that thing Honda builds and decides its a truck. that said my dads acadia is rated to tow 5k.) a good full framed car would to it also. I remember many people using station wagons back in the day to tow race cars.

Been riding back roads here is Mississippi. I've came across alot of 73-87 square body trucks. Some of them being Duallies. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a single cab 79 dually truck. I got close to the truck and I see it's a 4 speed truck. Not sure what engine it has tho.

will be a 350 or 454 im sure but to haul long distances with something with no over drive would suck. unless you want a project I would get something made in the 90s that had od. hd in gm is 93 iirc. now if you want a half ton they had 700r4s back in 83.

Just wondering if you are willing to spend this much on machine work and parts on a motor why not just buy a duramax? They can be found for about $8k sometimes for a decent truck. Or I dont know how loyal you are to GM but 2nd gen dodges with a cummins can be had pretty cheap.

And if you want a gas truck just buy a 1500hd/2500/2500hd that already has a 6.0/4l80e, they were made to tow and a f body is like nothing to tow. Even a 1500 stock would do it fine, just add a big tranny cooler to save the 4l60e
