Default Upgrading stock sound system. '01 Ranger XLT

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I'd like to preface this with I'm a complete car idiot, but I've spent a little while researching what I'd like to do with the sound system.

Basically, I'd like to get two sets of these speakers and put them in the current back/front factory speaker locations (they should fit right in, correct?).

From Crutchfield: /p_130TSA6874/Pioneer-TS-A6874R.html?search=Pioneer_TS-A6874R&skipvs=T

Then, I'd like to upgrade the stock head unit. I'm not really sure what to get here, although I think I'd like Alpine, because I don't understand how the preamp outputs relate to having an external amp.

As for my external amp, I'd like a 4 channel (correct?) to power each speaker. I was looking at this amp.

Any suggestions? I need to keep this fairly cheap, and I'm not looking for the best sound system on the block, or even one that's considered "good" by most of your standards, but definitely a big improvement over the stock system.

It's also fairly easy to hook up yourself, correct?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: If I could just run the speakers off of a nice head unit instead of running it through an amp, that would save me a hundred and fifty bucks. I'd prefer to do that, but I don't know how necessary an amp really is....

Well, first off, you dont need an external amp to power MOST speakers like the 4x6 and all that fit into the ranger. Best thing to go with, if you havent heard of the brand or if it has bad reviews, dont go with it.

Now, if youre wanting loud, Mid and High range from your regular component speakers like the door and dash speakers for example, you need to get some that can handle up to AT LEAST 100 watts if your going to run an external amplifier. However, this isnt very easy lol it takes awhile and you gotta know what youre doing. If you want good sound quality, loud, jus keep it simple.

Find a headunit that usually runs about 30 RMS watts, about 50 max watts per channel. Go with either Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Memphis, JVC, big brands. They usually work best and are reasonably priced. Then, I HIGHLY recommend using Memphis speakers. But usually Pioneer and better brands work great. Good luck and hit me up if you need anymore help. Im a big audio enthusiast!

What kind of budget are you working with?

If it were my truck, I would run the following setup.

Radio: Pioneer DEH-P9400BH - 229.99
"amp": Alpine KTP-445U - 149.99
Speakers: Kicker KS68 - 199.98 (99.99x2)

total of 579.96 all from crutchfield.

Plus they will send you the dash kit and wiring harness with your order. All of it is going to be as easy as wiring a harness it (that matches color for color). They will also send you speaker harnesses so youre speaker install is plug and play.
