Default Headlight switch

I have a 2000 GMC 1500 and the headlights stay on all the time .... I can't turn them off and have tried for years.
Is it made that way?
Can I install a later switch ..... It has light sensors on the dash top
Anybody know about these durn things?

Press the dome light switch in and out 3 times.

This is the override to turn off the headlights.

If you are talking about the dome override button, that doesn't work ..... wonder if I need a new switch?

Either the switch or the sensor under the dash.

When you press the dome override does it turn the dome off with the door open?

Sometimes the contact's get dirty with carbon build up inside.

The optic sensor is the little plastic dome thing popping up near the center of the dash pad near the windshield.

It's likely either that or the switch.

seeing as how the switch is turning the dome lights off I would suspect the sensor

Really need a proper Diagnostic scan tool to check things out.
