Default In-Dash DVD headunit???

I've been kickin around the idea of installing an indash dvd head unit. I know nothing about indashes. I want a flip out unit, i've used touchscreens and i dont like them. But I heard most flipouts wont work because they hit the dash trim befor fully opened? Is that true? I have around $300-500 to spend and I only want dvd, ipod, fm and cd. I dont need abunch of extra crap like hd radio, satellite radio, nav or bluetooth. I do want to keep function of my steering wheel controls and i want good sound quality. What are some good headunits you guys would reccommend?

I havent had any use with single din flipouts, so i cant answer your question on if they hit, but if i had to guess, some might hit before they fully open because the bezel sticks out a little bit. My brother and I put a Pioneer single din flip-out in his Marauder and the screen hit because it fully opened. Personally, I wasnt satisfied with that but he didnt care. Most guys i see on here have the double din.... that might tell you something about the single din flip-outs. And the flip-out screen units are touch screen too, so you arent getting away from that by going with the flip out. Both style of units have push button controls so you dont have to use the touch screen for everythig, but there are also units that are not touch screen at all. My old boss had a JVC i believe, a few years old, that was non-touch screen.

For the steering wheel controls, you need a PAC for the brand headunit you will buy.
This is an example of one.... http://www.crutchfield.com/p_127SWIJ...wheel+controls

I put a kenwood flip in mine last Monday (Kenwood KVT 512). It opens fully then flips the screen up. Only problem I found is it hits the shifter as it flips open when in Park or Reverse

I know you said you want a single din, but I just got a smokin' deal at sonicelectronix.com with the eclipse avn52d. Ipod, Dvd, nav, bluetooth, mp3, and cd... it does it all, but you don't have to pay for the extra goodies (accept for sat radio which doesn't matter to you). got it all with a 1 year warranty for $589.. I love it so far and havn't had any problems...
A lot of bang for your buck......

I was lookin around today and found the Pioneer AVH-5000... Its a lil more than I was wanting to spend, but it seems to be perfect for what I want. It has everything I want, plus the angle of the screen is adjustable when open, so it shouldnt hit the dash. It uses factory steering wheel controls. It is expandable to sat/hd radio an bluetooth, in case I change my mind in the future. The reviews on crutchfield all are positive and they say it sounds and functions excellent...It's fairly new on the market, but has anyone had any experience with it yet?

i personally have this one. it is a double din touchscreen but doesn't have the touch delay like the pioneer nav units. plus the price is better.

That looks like a nice unit! If the flip-out wont work, I'll prolly go with the p4000

I would suggest going with a nice indash unit. Save up a lil more, but hell you could find a nice used one for that kinda coin. I picked up a nice pioneer indash for under 350.. Check on ebay, it is your friend. IMO it looks much cleaner with the indash vs a flip out...

in dashes are nicer in the long run...they look a lot better & IMO are more functional for a truck than a flip-out...and here's what you should get if you're gonna get the in-dash
