Bose sound system/radio problem - strange behavior
#1
Guys, posting this for my dad with an 04 SS.
I also posted this over on the GM-Trucks.com site in the "Ask the GM-Technician" forum:
I recently purchased an 04 Silverado SS with the 6-speaker Bose sound system and 6-disk CD changer stereo. If you turn the radio off with the ignition on, and then turn the radio back on, the left front channel disappears (both the left driver door speaker and the tweeter on the pillar). Everything else works fine.
Now if you stop, open the door, turn the ignition off, then back on again, the left front channel will come back on, until you close the door and turn the radio off and on again. I can make it do this just about every time I try it.
I know this sounds like smoke and voodoo, but it drives me nuts. I got a 3 month, 3000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on the truck when I bought it since it was certified. I'll let the dealer know when I take it in for a scheduled lock tumbler replacement on the driver door (they had the door apart trying to figure out why the key wouldn't work and had to order a new lock cylinder).
Any ideas? Could a loose connection in the door cause both the door speaker and pillar speaker to be intermmittent?

well i might be mistaken but i think that the tweeter is hooked up to the same wire that runs to the front door speaker on each side so that would make sense.....just curious if it was somethin that they did when the tore the door apart.
usually the spaker not working would be bc its grounding out, on an aftermarket radio if one speaker grounds then none of them play but on a factory radio it will just play the other speakers that arent grounded. that sounds like what you have but i cant for the life of me figure out why it would lonly happen at certain times bc if the speaker is grounded it should be grounded all the time untile fixed.....

Ok, quick update on this one.

OK, I'm gonna bump this up. Here's an update for anyone that ever has this symptom. Truck is under a GM "Certified Used Vehicle" warranty. So dealer first installed a new Bose amp, supposedly fixing the problem ..... NOT. Still has the same symptoms.
Just took it in again yesterday and they called and said diagnostics now say it's the head unit. They've ordered an "exchange" radio head, which presumably means they are going to swap out and install a rebuilt/refurbished radio. I have no problem with that as long as it works properly. My question to any GM Tech is "Is this normal for warranty work?" Why wouldn't they just install a new head unit?

Any ideas on the warranty question?
