Default 01 Tahoe Head Unit Swap Questions

ive got a 01 tahoe lt without Bose but with Onstar and i want to change the head unit out to something better but not sure if i can just plug and play. it has a bunch of speakers so i was thinking it might be like my trans am and have amps built in that make the stuff 4ohm instead of 8ohm like everything else aftermarket.
is this true or can you just yank out the unit and pop in an aftermarket player?

it has the tape deck down below the cd player thats tied into it, would you just unplug it?

also its 1.5 DIN size right?

any help or links would be great, i want to do a system soon.

im not a stereo buff. My friend usually hooks me up. But unless you have the bose system you can just upgrade the head unit. You can also remove the cd player below and put a pocket in its place from chevy. Only the bose system is integrated with amps and everything.

If it has Onstar it's not a direct swap. I tried to swap head units in my mom's 2000 Suburban and I got no sound from the speakers. She ended up taking it somewhere, so I'm not sure what exactly they did, but I know it involved disabling Onstar.

If you have the rear sub, you will have an amp behind the glove box that will have to be delt with. If you want to add and aftermarket head unit, you will need an adapter that converts the high level out puts from the head unit to low level into the amp. Or else you can just re-wire everything yourself as I did. An OnStar adapter is a waste of money as yours is no longer functional.

btw... I almost didn't post this due to you shitty attitude in post #2. This is an internet forum, not insta-answer. You need some patients or do some research yourself.

call crutchfield up- they have some awsome customer service, and you tell them what you have- they will make sure you have everything you need for the install- it might end up costing you 50$ extra in the end, but you wont be running back and forth to the store because you find you need somthing else
