I wonder how many Dick jokes a guy named Richard suffers in a lifetime. I just spent 5 minutes reading how dick became a nickname for Richard when I could have been reading about how to tune my own truck. Guess atomic and friends will have to keep doing it for me

Back before Dick was a slang word ( we have the British infantry to thank for that) people where lazy and did not like writing out long names in letters so the used nick names. Obviously Rick or Ric was short for Richard but way back before the internet life was boring so people liked to use rhyming nick names as well. Rick became Dick. That also explains why Bob is short for Robert. Rob became Bob. Fascinating right!
