FWIW
making it fast is easy. hard parts arnt. the stock tranny can handle ~80rwhp over stock before it limps some are more some are less. for ~2300(sun coast sc3) in tranny parts will give relable hold power to 500-600 rwhp. i take it you are mehanicly inclined and the tranny is unlike the 60, 80 and 85s and is very easy to rebuild with the good stuff
a 4x4 truck will need the following if you are planing on racing it.
-tie rod sleaves - tock power adn a good launch can bend them.
-cognito braces- keep the steering box and idler arm form rotating( unfortunately they are the same size as the 1/2 versions)
-transfer case brace- guys have ripped these of the tranny mountion surface and needed new t-cases
-spring clamps for the rear springs keep the rear from squating can be made for less then 10 bucks
-lowere the torsion bar screws ALL the way down. this save the 1/2 shafts in the front. good for 10.XX sec 1/4 @ 7100 pounds.

tuner wise: the big dogs use one of these,PPE, EFI Live, MOONSHINE(efi live in a can), mcrat racing (efi live as well),
on bigger tunes you will need a lift pump to mantian rail pressure. the FPRCV(fuel presure regualtor control valve) need shimming for bigger tunes.

what i did not mention is exhaust and guages
boost- min 35 psi guage
guages 1600* is the most common.. the dmax is rated at 1375* sustained operation egt. it can take alot more for short periods of time (ie drag strip) min pegs 1700* with stock exhaust pipe.
exhaust
thing people have found out. 4" exhaust drop ~200* from what stock pipe does with same tune, stacks is another ~150* or so
on LLY you most likely will need an egr block off plate and boost fooler/finger stick to eliminate code
you can find alot more info about these trucks here free member ship
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php
they also will do a free vin look up and give you the build sheet as well
basicly what this boils down for ~6000 you can have a low 13 sec grocery getter truck that can race on sunday and work on monday and hit ~20mpg empty on the freeway
hope this helps
