I don't remember the details exactly but on my first gen3 build, I made the mistake of using the wrong size socket on arp rod bolts and I rounded a few before I figured it out. The bolt was a std sae and I was using a metric or visa versa I don't remember exactly. Maybe that contributed to the socket splitting when it slipped? The size is really close from metric to std. maybe 7/16" vs 12mm or something like that.

I was using a 1/2 drive, 12pt, 10mm socket, but a 3/8std works just as well.

That sounds right. I was rounding 1 out of every 5-6 of them with one and switched to the tighter one and problem solved. Very little difference in fit with a 12 point but enough.

What i'm getting at is the wrong sized socket on the bolt could cause the socket to split when it sliped. In other words the culprit could have been an improper socket used and not a faulty socket.

funny you should say that, it's the same one that I used for my build. I never checked the packaging to see if the size had changed.
