Stereo Imaging
#1
Now that my Truck is off the road I'm screwing around with the stereo and thinking about doing away with the rear pillar location.
I'm running a 5 channell amp powering a 12 dvc, 6.5 seperates in the door, (tweeter in front pillar- like the bose setup) and 4x6 plates in the stock rear pillar.
I find myself fading out the rear pillar so I was thinking about getting kick panels and getting rid of the rear pillar speakers. Or maybe moving them somewhere else up front.
I don't want to get crazy and mold them in the front pillars because hopefully someday i have a boost and fuel gauge there.
Any suggestions?
Anyone running the q logic quick panels?
Thanks

You could almost solve the issue by changing to a new deck.
Im my truck I run the 6.5" component set just like factory for 01' which means the mids and highs are both in the door.
Normally with this kind of setup if you pop in a good vocal track and close your eyes the vocals will not be localized, they will sound scattered and like they are coming out of each door and kind of low.
I swapped out to a new Eclipse CD8454 and even on the easy-mode setting I can set the time alignment feature and it sounds like the vocals are now distinctly coming out of the raidio location. It is still a little low compared to the setup in my T/A but for using stock locations it is pretty damned awesome! You can even go into Pro-mode and measure the distance from each speaker to your head then input the delay manually but I was happy enough with the results that I didn't go that far.
I did the exact same thing in my T/A but with even better results due to the angled tweeter locations.
In all if you have the cash I would still ditch those crappy 4x6 rear speakers and do the kicks with a good 5.25" component set but I wouldn't expect that to cure your imaging/staging problem by itself. I did that setup in my Ex's regular cab truck and it didn't fix it. I'm gonna eventually have her get the Eclipse deck. Sound quality is superb with it anyway!
Another trick you can try is to take one set of front speakers and reverse phase on them. Say take your left front set of speakers wires at the amplifier. Put the posistive speaker wire into the negetive slot on the amp and the negative speaker wire into the positive amp slot. This can reduce your midbass which sucks but often the better imaging more than makes up fro it. I did this for about a year till I got my new deck.

creed, i worked at auto radio in memphis for over 7 years and dealt with the qlogic stuff quite often and they are quality pieces. if you dont plan on spending time trying to position the tweeter in the door to get the desired imaging and headroom then kick panels are the way to go. i would definitely get them out of the a pillars, it works ok but is not the best position. you can use the door locations and try and put a baffle behind the 6.5 to help out with midbass and we used wood blocks cut at an angle (very thin) and in a moon shape to position the direction of the tweeter. you can use something to stick the wood to the door and move it around til you get the desired placement of the vocals usually just in front of and below the rear view mirror. i would leave the 4x6's in the rear just turn them down a little, a bit of rear fill always helps. put your hands behind your ears, like mickey mouse, facing forward and you should not hear the rear speakers. if you put them in front of your ears, blocking out the fronts, you should hear the rears and the fronts should almost over power the rears. i know this is kinda long but in vehicles with door speakers and plenty of room for kick panels, you have so many options. good luck and let me know if you have any questions

Thanks,
My setup is
Alpine 9825 deck
Boston acoustics 6.5 seperates and 4x6 boston plates.
I'm went with a 5 channel Autotek amp and a 12" dvc sub behind the seat.
Stuff seamed pretty good for the price.
Because I'm going with some good power to evrything now I feel like I'm going to be wasting the power on the rear plates because I have them faded out so much.
I'm might try 5 1/4 seperates in kick panels without having them cancel out the door drivers. I'm looking for more midrange and midbase for the heavy guitar **** I listen too.
I have a base model truck so I'm stuck with the crappy door panels.
I should just stick with the engine mods
