this is what I used. I used some micro machine polish first with a buffer, it think it is made by 3M. It is basically a swirl remover to get the swirl marks out and micro scratches. Then I used Mequiers Gold Class wax, in my opinion it is the best and lasts the longest. This is what I found works best for me and my truck is BLACK so it shows everything. Oh and one other thing is do not use any fabric softener on the towels/rags/bugger mits you use on your truck. The fabric softener will leave streaks.
Doing all of that makes the paint look like a mirror.

i detail cars every week..... i would wash it... take a claybar to it.... wipe clean with i microfiber towl.... buff with the turtle wax or what ever you want to use... and wipe it off... i wouldnt buff without take the claybar to it chances are on a dark color you will see swirls if you dont

if you want protection and a deep shine i would use a teflon based wax that will shine deep and protects good... thats what they probilbly tried to sell you for $300 if you baught i new.... i wouldnt wax and polish all at the same time personaly.... but if you want to just get the shine i would go with a good polishe.... either way i would pick up a orbital polisher cuz they dont spin like regular buffers so you will have less chance of swirls
