I have an 02 and mine keeps falling off, the tonneau holds it in place. It's just tape, at least it was for mine. Just yank the sucker off, if it breaks big whoop, you're not going to put putting it back on.

 

it is just double sided tape.

 

Even though mine is a step side, my body man put screws in for support, after some cow hit me while she was texting. I like having my handle for now.

My gate cap was taped on but it has some holes for the larger, gate cap with a tiny wing. Mine is a NBS so yours might be different but mine has holes.

As for shaved or not. There is only one way, bald! I tell the old lady that and for a street truck it looks best.

I used to despise roll pans but have grown to love them. They look so clean and getting the handle out of the way really makes a big difference. I certainly see the protection issue but I am an optimist.

I have thought about a pan for mine for years and the decision was finally made to keep the bumper.
I live in the SF/Bay Area and some people out here park by the Braille method.
I also have the box in the back and the bumper is used as a step, often!
