I've been doing satin finishes on helmets and bikes for a while. Best bet is 2 step (base/clear). I was tooling with the idea of wet sanding the clear coat off my black Tundra and just shooting a satin clear over it. What I've found is the best way to get a smooth finsh is to wet sand and then shoot another light coat. Obviously more time consuming and expensive, but after 4 coats uv pretty much dealt with it.
