I cant tell what they're made of, or coated with. Mine are polished aluminum and are not coated .
I uswe the power f'n ball and mothers polish, then top them off with a natural carnuba wax. Lasts a few months. I wish i had gotten the damm wheels chromed!

Go to Discount Tire and get you some Xtreeme polish. It's $15 a can, but it's one of the best polishes I've used.

GMC5.3, if you're referring to the wheels shown in your sig picture, I have a set of those and I made the HUGE mistake of having the coating taken off because it was really hard to get the shine I was looking for. After the coating was gone, I discovered that I only thought it was hard before...now it's a nightmare!

Whatever you do, don't remove the coating without doing something to seal the surface after the polishing. I'm trying to finish polishing mine and then I'm going to try sealing them with ZoopSeal. If that doesn't work, I'll either replace 'em or bit the bullet and have 'em redone professionally.

I don't think you can do it unintentionally; it would have to be done chemically or with some kind of power-tools as long as the coating was in good shape. Mine appeared to be cracking and peeling so I had it removed.

I've heard that polished wheels can be powdercoated to seal them but you have to find a painter/coater that knows their stuff.

your wheels are coated dude. Soap and water clean up should suffice. After they are clean top them with your fav paint sealant to protect from brake dust and you are good to go.
