Default how to remove tailgate cap fasteners (BigKID)

i'm finally getting around to putting my smooth tailgate cap on. i need to know how to take off the fasteners, bolt holes, whatever you wanna call em, that the stock cap screwed into. i've looked at it and there seems to be no reasonable way to take these out w/out seriously damaging the paint around them. the cap should cover the holes so i'm not worried about minor scratches but i don't wanna tear off paint and destroy the tailgate. anyone know how to do this or should i just 3M tape the smooth cap over them?

You cant take them out with out doing some body work. I just had that cap installed over mine and it did fine. Did you end up painting it?

Installed mine over the holes...to my knowledge, that's the way they all are.

The non-wing tailgates just have empty holes and the cap is just 3M taped over them.

i was almost certain there were just empty holes back there. i just wish i knew of a way to get back to that point w/out destroying the paint or tailgate around them.

If they are the push in fasteners that i'm thinking they are, try putting a piece of sturdy wire in the hole that has a bend at the end of it and giving a good tug on the wire to pop it out of its hole.

I did not take mine out. The cover went right over them. Can't tell they are there.
