You can use a cleaner wax or a mild paint polish. Metal polish is fine too - you just don't need much product, but you do need to work it in a bit. I'm guessing the smearing is from using a little too much of the polish.
I prefer a mild paint polish since this stuff can be a little bit fragile...too aggressive and you can actually introduce scratches that won't come out.

i'll give it a whirl. i need to finish waxing the thing. i did borrow some plast-x stuff for polishing plastic and man does it work. the black things by the rear glass on my tahoe was fadded looking and i used that and they look lke i used tire polish crap on them. and the painted moldings on the sides. they have a chrome strip on them. is looks like it is cleared. is it? or is it just chrome? i've been working on the go so much i for got about the show lol. the whole tahoe needs a day of love.

I believe all the trim pieces that appear to be chrome-plated have the plastic "chrome" on them. The plastic polish, as you've discovered, is a fine option. Once they look as good as you want them, you can apply your favorite wax/sealant for protection.
