Rented a Tahoe for work a couple weeks ago... The new GM Fullsize SUVs are ridiculously nice, enjoy the new ride!

I cant wait to try a tank of E85, up 25hp and 33ftlbs from a dang fill up (or so I read)

 

So why they still put this little 5.3 in thier largest land going yacht is beyond me........but........I will say with this new Gen V engine it does pretty good for power, nothing earth shattering mind you, but good solid motor-vation and this is on the 87 petrol.

 

Fuel mileage is why, and like you said it's got plenty of power do to all the normal needs for any soccer mom that needs a $50,000 SUV.

 

so that's the other thing, pricing is a little ridiculous on these things right

The Ford Expedition EL's are a little easier on the wallet but the interior wasn't as nice to us and long term reliability of the 3.5 eco boost was a concern for me..........however.........the torque curve on that beast WAS SWEET!

I honestly wish there was a still a 3/4 ton model cause I would have been all over that but the long term plan, besides the daily carpool-a-rama, is getting this thing setup to tow a trailer.
Based on my research the safest way to vacation with a trailer, even Class A or C drivers, is in a DOT compliant crash tested car/truck, ala' land yacht.
With that said I would LOVE to have that 6.2 but that comes at a premium I just can't justify..........Like you said it's already a 50k SUV.
Additionally, I was looking into a 5th wheel for the longest and after reading/seeing what happens when "things go wrong" it quite literally scared the **** out of me for the safety of my family.

So back to the 5.3, it really isn't all that bad, and there are a few things I can do to help with the planned work loads.

1. Front/Rear oversized swaybars
2. Additional rear springs for heavy loads
3. Better shocks all around
4. Most importantly some 4.10 gears and locker for a nice increase in mechanical advantage.

Stuff like that

and if I get really froggy, a low boost (5lbs) positive displacement supercharger.

 

700-800 a month (60 month) for a car/truck payment is so absurb, but me personally I couldn't afford something like that by myself. Yet the local dealer sells these new trucks like hot cakes sometimes lol.

The older models have less power but the prices are slowly coming down now.

 

The 6-speed makes the 5.3 feel not as doggy. Plus, it's got DI, VVT and makes a decent amount of torque.
