TXsilverado 2.0 Build Thread

but not a silverado:) this will be a long build and probably not updated very often due to the time it will take me trying to jew it together. i dont plan on going too crazy with the budget on this thing (without half assing it). I try to find as many used parts as i can. i do have alot of left over parts from past engines so it should help. i will try to keep a running tally of money spent for anyone that may want to do this in the future.

i picked this blown motor 1996 s10 pickup for $900. automatic trans, great body, good paint, good interrior. eventually i plan to paint it hotrod black (satin black). hopefully by that point i can find a cheap stepside bed for it along with a 4-6" cowl hood to fit my intake.

i'm going to pick this up after work today. the donor motor came from a 2007 CTS-V and has around 60,000 miles on it. i splurged on this part and put a major ding in the budget of my budget hotrod. but i always wanted to play with a LS2 so i got me one. $2,200 but this motor is CLEAN inside and out.

Better get your name changed to TXs10 lol. That's gonna be a lot of fun with an LS2.

TXsilverado 04-18-2012 10:56 AM

nah, the silverado is still around. just not a performance truck by any means.

ak2007r6 04-18-2012 11:42 AM

That little truck is going to be a blast with that motor

ltr450ryder 04-18-2012 11:56 AM

That's thing will be nasty stew

jared91 04-18-2012 12:27 PM

Nice stu. What are the plans, F/I? I wanna see an F1r on there ;)

BlackGMC 04-18-2012 01:09 PM

i wanted to try F/I but gave up on that idea. there's no room under the hood and nitrous is just too easy! besides i think the LS2 sits close to 11.0:1 compression stock. i decided to try something new and go with a carb setup on this motor. most likely a super vic and msd ignition. 4l80e transmission with probably a -4500+ converter on a trans brake and a cam/spring package. right now i'm leaning towards the trex 242/248 .608/.612 110lsa but i dont know if it will clear the LS2 pistons. i dont plan to pull these heads off so flycutting the pistons is out of the quesiton. my mind will probably change a dozen times before the purchase.

lowered907 04-18-2012 01:42 PM

Was hoping for F/I but i'm sure it will be a nice build. Do me a favor? take lots of pictures and keep a best guess on what you spend?

ltr450ryder 04-18-2012 01:45 PM

Dam Stu I think u just dream on be cams in ur motors! Lol

TXsilverado 04-18-2012 01:47 PM

i like big sticks! :supergay:it's not as big as the one i stuck in yours:eek::lol:

lowered907 04-18-2012 01:49 PM

Forgot to mention, 6 cowl hoods suck on these trucks. cant get the hood open far enough to get your body under without smashing the cowl into the windshield or taking it off everytime you tinker with it. Just my $.02

TXsilverado 04-18-2012 01:55 PM

4" it is then. i wouldnt be totally against a pin on hood. the hood and paint is WAY in the future though. i have a drivetrain to work out first.

lowered907 04-18-2012 02:02 PM

here's some motivation for you... mine on the left, buddies on the right. I can't find any pictures with the 6" cowl.

black00chev 04-18-2012 03:17 PM

Nice man! Im gonna do a V8 swap on my s10 as well someday so Ill be watching. Interested to see what is involved with the swap. Mine is an 01 but im sure its pretty damn close to the same.

I was thinking of an L92/TH400 for me personally but your LS2/4L80 combo sounds nice as well!

DAYTONA81 04-18-2012 03:51 PM

NICE...There was a S10 in pasadena with a H/C 6.0 that ran a 11.6@115 N/A with 3.42s 2nd time out so i can see this being a fun project

TXsilverado 04-18-2012 03:55 PM

less weight and a great hooking platform is what i'm excited about! i'd like to be able to trap around 115 n/a on the stock heads.

ZR1 DREAMING 04-18-2012 04:18 PM

That little dime is gonna haul some balls! Nice finds on the two.

TXsilverado 04-18-2012 04:24 PM

i really hope so. my main goal is to be able to touch 1.3x 60' times on the dope.

TXsilverado 05-05-2012 12:51 PM

i just picked me up a cam for the s10. i got the cam "used" but it was only installed into a block, and never even had the rockers tightened on top of it. i'll call it new lol. picked it up for $220 shipped.

Howard's Cam 236/242 .612/.612 110lsa
IO 12
IC 44
TDC Overlap 19
EC 7
EO 55
ICL 106

it should fit the bill nicely:)

i was going to go bigger, but decided that i didnt want to flycut the pistons. this cam will be pretty tight on PTV clearance(probably below recomended), but nowhere near how tight the cam i originally planned.

2004SSS 05-05-2012 01:00 PM

please tell me this was for you ?

bmd_CL 05-05-2012 01:11 PM

haha lol, this project is going to be awesome when its finished

TXsilverado 05-05-2012 01:12 PM

i wish it was for me, but that one is EFI. i'm playing with a carb on this one. i wont go over 250 on the stock bottom end so a plate on the vic jr will do just fine. that definately looks cool as shit though!

i found an intake and carb today. it's a recently rebuilt holley double pumper with a brand new victor jr intake. comes with the fuel bar, throttle brackets, gaskets and the fuel bar. 450 shipped.

NOTE: NOT MY ENGINE PICTURED, BUT MY INTAKE/CARB

Hummer oil pan ?

Headers?

TXsilverado 05-08-2012 12:58 PM

yeah i will use the hummer oil pan so i dont have to cut the crossmember. headers will probably be brp 1 3/4 or brp 1 7/8. i havent decided if i want to use the 1 7/8 yet because i dont think the ac compressor will fit with them. i'd like to keep A/C if i can.

BlackGMC 05-08-2012 01:00 PM

I think you have to relocate the ac compressor to the top to fit an s10

TXsilverado 05-08-2012 01:18 PM

nah, a simple frame notch will let the ac compressor slip right in. the only thing i havent quite figured out is the transmission crossmember for an 80e if i go that route. over on tech i see guys with 500 running years on a junkyard 80e with a trans-go shift kit. until i'm ready to drop the big bucks on a built transmission i guess i'll have to skimp out on running a trans-brake. theres an 80e on craigs list from a 2005 service van that was rebuilt 25,000 miles ago for 300 bux. tempting. i've bought enough for it this week though lol.

Beau@SDPC 05-08-2012 01:27 PM

Cool build! If you need any new parts, let me know! Be glad to help ya out!

TXsilverado 05-08-2012 01:35 PM

how are those fans working out? i can't think of any new parts that i would be buying except for maybe some pac or patriot dual springs. and ofcourse the aftermarket engine/trans mounts and headers.

Beau@SDPC 05-08-2012 02:09 PM

Like a champ! Moving some serious air!!! I have yet to get over 210* in this West TX heat.

Yeah, whatever you need just let me know!

oakley6575 05-08-2012 04:08 PM

sub'd. Cool Project

TXsilverado 05-11-2012 09:27 AM

found a good deal on a new oil pan kit. comes from a hummer and gives enough clearance to where i dont need to cut my crossmember. PN# 19212593. comes with the pan, dipstick/dipstick tube, windage tray, pick up tube, gaskets and bolts. 132 shipped.
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...eaurw_SW43UM7U
also trying to work a deal on a used MSD 6012 ignition and air cleaner. hopefully we can come to an agreement. this long term project is happening a little faster than i planned lol.

as for the transmission, i think phantom talked me into a full manual valve body 80e. a buddy at the local dealership has a 80e core in and i think they want around 150 for it. time to learn how to rebuild a transmission myself! it's a good skill to have, but i HATE HATE HATE the smell/texture/taste of burnt trans fluid (somehow i always end up with it in my mouth? i guess i touch my face too much.

oakley6575 05-11-2012 01:12 PM

I always seem to get that crap in my eye. Haha

ak2007r6 05-11-2012 01:17 PM

There is a joke to be made in the last couple posts.........LOL

If I had the equipment to take out the transmission at my house I would love to learn how to rebuild one....

bluecajun5.3 05-11-2012 02:43 PM

Badass project you got yourself into Stew. That cam is going to work great, mine is not much bigger than that. If you need any help with the msd box just holler.
