My first engine build.
I have in my life only done 2 comlplete rebuilds both 4 bangers. 1 successful and the other not so much. Both times I had my dad nearby to help not this time. Anyway found a guy here in rapid city that takes his race stuff to denver for machine work. No local guys are interested in helping me.
I have my original 5.3 (LC9 I believe) out of my 09. Has about 60,000 miles on it. The plan is to bore it out to 3.898 and have a 5.7. My truck is turbo charged so this is FI build. Nothing special I know its been done before just need some advice along the way to make sure I dont screw somthing major up. Budget unknown just going to start and go from there. Hp goals dont know but want to make sure if I decide to go for 800 the engine can handle it but most likley 500rwh. I know i can make that on my stock 5.3 but this will be my backup if i blow it. Things to do and parts to buy. Will add to the list as needed. Machine work bore to 3.898 cost unknown Cam triple 12 most likley (suggestions welcome) cost $399 + shipping Forged pistons ( not sure wich ones to keep compression correct for FI) cost guessing $650 Rods stock unless anyone suggest otherwise. Free Crank stock. Free Valve train no idea what needs done. Just duel springs. Suggestions Timing chain upgrade. I think I have read most guys do this will research. Oil pump upgrade if available. Plug something for better oil pressure. Read that somewhere as well. Heads stock 243. Will have shop go over them. Guessing valves need replaced since 2 of them have damage from piston melting unless they can be cleand up. DOD/AFM Delete $225 Head studs china maybe they seem to be working for other guys. Stall converter $995 Lots of other stuff i am sure like I said this is basicly my first time doing somthing like this. Should hear back in a couple days from machine shop to see if they are willing to do the work and cost. Post your suggestions and thoughts half the fun is planning and discussing this stuff. |
What is your budget?
Knowing how much HP you want to put down will help. What converter are you running? |
If you swap the cam to a triple 12, the DoD/AFM has to go. You'll need a new valley plate, lifters, lifter trays, cam gear.

DOD/AFM delete will be added. |
What is a good stall for daily driver that occasionally tows camper and utv?

Ordered some parts today finally. Got a triple 12 cam and some pistons coming from stock48. Have not decided if ill stay with stock rods or not. Also need to pick up a micrometer and dial bore gauge any suggestions on brands? I see the prices very considerably.

Depends on how much you want to spend... mitutoyo, starrett, brown and Sharpe at the upper end are all good. On the cheaper side, SPI is usually decent for $.

Parts I have ordered now
custom forged pistons and rings 9.5:1 stock48 triple 12 cam stock48 pac single springs stock48 DOD delete kit. texas speed clevite bearings texas speed What else might I need for rebuilding the short block? Is stock oil and water pump ok or should they be upgraded? Would like to have everything I need ready to go before I start. |
I'd say stock oil pulp and water pump are fine.
China studs are good Looks like you have a good list. I would only add new motor mounts. I didn't replace them w mine with 100k miles. |

Not much for aftermarket mounts.

Parts are starting to show up. Getting excited but pistons take about 3 weeks to make. So wont be doing anything til they show up. Then the machine shop will probably be another few weeks. This is what circle D recommends for stall converter. What do you guys think. I dont know anything about them but sounds about right since I have to tow camper sometimes.
We could try a tight 258mm converter. This would get us in the mid 2K footbrake RPM which should be great for this sized turbo and still be decent for towing use. For lockup, I would recommend you opt for the triple disk. Thougths? |

Got my pistons today. Going to send the block off to ft Collins in about 2 weeks. I am pretty sure I will have them assemble the short block. I have to much money in it now to risk doing it myself.

Got my drive shaft in today. This should keep up with the new motor. Hopefully it will get rid of some of that clunking as well.

Decided to try and make this ugly truck intake look better for the new engine. First lesson is melted hot intake material will melt a good hole in your flesh when it lands on you. Lol. Figure I will get it fairly smoothed out then put on a few layers of fiberglass to cover up the holes. Hopefully it will stick and be strong enough.

Had some time to start to lay down some glass. If it sticks I think it will end up looking fairly decent.

This little project is taking up way too much time. I'm definitely no body guy guessing at least 2-3 more hours of filler and sanding before I'm close to a smooth finish.

WOWZA! That is one eye popping color.
It looks like it came out great when you get it into the sun. |
You cant miss it! :D. I have no painting skills so I did not get as much of the metallic showing as I wanted. I think I needed to do a ghost coat to get them to show more. I have a lot more parts to paint so I can work on it.
|
I put some primer on this today and there are so many imperfections. Should have bought a hi ram and been done with it.

Finally slowing down at work enought to start back on this project. Making a list of things I want to get done.
Install new engine Relocate battery Mount surge tank Redo fuel, trans, oil lines with ptfe hose and an fittings. Relocate coils Remove or reroute a/c lines not sure what i want to do there a/c in the summer is nice. Check into converting to 4l80 and gathering all parts needed to swap from 6l80. Not alot of info on this in the forum. Clean up as much wiring under the hood as possible. That's the short list anyway. Hopefully can get most of this done in the next 2 months. |
|
Have the surge tank mounted. Just in front of gas tank. Used my spare battery tray to mount it.

I like the engine color....looking good man
|
cool.

For what it’s worth I just coated a set of Autotec pistons for a guy and while they are really nice pistons they defintely needed a detail. Where they had machines the hard edges burrs were left from the tooling that you could cut a fingernail on. The oil drainback holes had burrs in groove etc etc. Just a FYI
|
Set the engine in place today. Waiting on parts so had nothing else to do. I like the alternator down low but it's close to the steering shaft.

Put my overflow tank inside the passenger fender.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...40b2f0ff0d.jpg |
mocking up a place for my battery. Have enough room for more stuff if I need.
Putting it where the spare used to be. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...b575024833.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...2dce8a1c43.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...12e41e30f7.jpg |
Not enough room for surge tank to work where I mounted it. Ordered more fittings will have to wait until next week to finish the fuel system. I did get the stock sending unit modified. Regulator and filter removed. New fittings on top. The corrugated fuel line is nice stuff to work with.

I am thinking of moving the fuse box and computer out of the engine bay. I am not removing any circuits the truck is still my daily. It looks awesome and that's why I want to do it.
I think the easiest way would be to put it behind the front bumper but also considering putting it next to my battery in the spare tire location. I figure gm has kept most the same colors and wire gauge size over the past years. So I might see if I can get big chunks of harness from u pull it. They wont have anything newer then late 90's early 00's but hoping I can keep all the colors the same. if you have any tips or ideas please share them. I am 50/50 on doing this because the amount of work it will be but it will look awesome. |
|
Nice build. Do you remember how much the pistons were? I'm trying to find a budget minded piston to use on stock rods to compare to the price of forged rods/pistons. Also what is the best way to contact stock48?
|
Honestly can't remember how much they were. It's been awhile. Send him a PM. He will respond.

had a busy week so not much time for the truck. I did a little bit of work on the fuel system.
