My "Built by ME" 4L80E and drivetrain upgrade thread

19 Attachment(s)
Well after i broke my "built" 60 in Oct/Nov, i decided enough with the 60e, and decided to swap to a 80. I may not need it now, but i have some plans for the next year

I want to thank my fellow mods who helped me out. Bill for letting me borrow the Kent Moore tools and Tranny stand. Ben for convincing me to build it. And most importantly Vince B for all the help along the way. I could not have done it without your help, Thanks again Vince!

So i started with a 2001 4L80 out of a dually. I wanted a 99-2001(early), but my luck i ended up with the 2001 late. It had roughly 100k on it and the insides look pretty good, nothing was trashed, Clutches looked good, but it was just insanely dirty on the inside... So i replaced EVERYTHING!!!

Here is the build sheet:

4L80 master rebuild kit
Internally dual fed
1/2 Transgo HD-2 kit (basically springs only, Transgo Seperator plate still in the box along with the pressure relief crap)
Borg-Warner clutches
Raybestos steels
All new sprangs (Low Clutch, Overdrive, and Intermediate)
New Bonded Pistons
ALL new bushings (except the center support, screw that one!)
ALL new bearings
Rollerized rear case
Rollerized Forward Hub
Billet Foward Hub
Torlon Check Balls
Sonnax Self Regulating Boost Valve
Sonnax Torque Converter Clutch Regulator Valve
Sonnax Line-to-Lube Pressure Regulator Valve Kit
Carbon Fiber Reverse Band
Borg Warner 2nd gear Band (Carbon Fiber one fit like crap)
All new solenoids, Manifold Pressure switch, and new internal harness.

New CircleD flexplate
New CircleD 3C 3600 single disc

A few other odds and ends Vince suggested

Just incase anyone was wondering there have been a few other build threads like this, check them out

If anyone wants some pics, you can check out my Photobucket, there is ~300 of them! Taking pics as i took it apart really helped with reassembly...

So whats next?

I am going to order a new Driveshaft & front yoke with front and rear 1350 joints and a new pinion yoke.

Then i have to redo my gears

Then i am gonna work on the suspension... Shock relocate and either Caltracs or Assassin bars.

Hopefully i should have the Tranny installed by the end of Feb/Mar...

Bill Reid 01-27-2012 09:10 PM

Super nice build! Congrats!

Bill

BlackGMC 01-27-2012 09:13 PM

Thanks Bill and just so you know all your tools are safe and sound! I might suggest getting a smaller bolt for the spring compressor, it is one long winded bastard. Thanks again for your help!

TURBO TIME!!!!!!!!!! :D:devil:

BlackGMC 01-27-2012 09:28 PM

Indeed it is. Soon  i am curious to see how a high compression H/C LQ9 does with about #12s of boost

We'll find out soon enough. Im sure with your E85 station and some EFI Dead you'll figure it out! Let me know when ya plan on doing the swap. I need an excuse to come to Fort Worth anyways hahaha :chug:

Thats the truth.

Those totes and bags would have ended up at a trans builder if I were that one trying to do it. :jest:

BlackGMC 01-28-2012 04:27 PM

Thanks guys, ya i started getting pretty nervous when i started taking it apart, but handling it in sections worked out pretty good. I had 2 different manuals and in combination they were great. Eventually when i get to build a car i plan on building another 80 with a brake.

TIM Z 01-28-2012 05:35 PM

Congrats on your build man!

Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself, your braver and have more time than me!!

That case really looks nice painted up:pimp:

You'll like the BW clutches, mine are holding up very well.

Also what a great feeling to have a trans that will hold whatever you throw at it and not puke out like a 60E.

Thanks for documenting all the way, this will help lots of peeps.

How high CR is your LQ9?

BlackGMC 01-28-2012 06:15 PM

Thanks Tim, i have always tried todo all my stuff myself. This was a biggy, i have one other thing to replace then EVERYTHING on my truck will be done with my hands. Oh and my CR is around 10.8.

TIM Z 01-28-2012 06:44 PM

I bet 8-10 PSI and some meth or corn juice will just be insane:devil:

Do you have the part numbers or manufacturer of your AN cooler line fittings?

BlackGMC 02-05-2012 07:43 PM

Thanks man. Ya i tend to over do things, but i enjoy it. Wait till i start on the DS loops and rear suspension

05stepside 02-10-2012 07:50 PM

Insanely jealous of your skills and free time!

I can't give you enough props! It's also amazing how far a little bit of paint can go!

BlackGMC 02-10-2012 08:33 PM

Thanks kenny. Free time??? It took me 2 months to build that tranny and my "honey-do" list is huge cause i worked on it instead of other things. Hopefully i will get it installed next month.

05stepside 02-10-2012 09:04 PM

I know you've been working on it for a while and it shows! :) Anyone with like 30mins has more free time than me haha :(

You got a little fancy with the x-member, didn't ya? lol

Everything looks great! You're going to love the 80E.

Ya i did but for a couple of reasons. I hate how tight it is where the exhaust goes over the crossmember. Also when/if i redo my exhaust this summer i want to be avle to run the ypipe under the middle of the crossmember. Now i have plenty of clearance on the side or under the trans to run my exhaust.

They're all good! My oldest turns 2 next month and my youngest is going to be 4 months next month!

How's your wifey and your herd doing? Maybe one of these days I could come out and we could shoot the sh*t and you could let me check out your handy work in person?

BlackGMC 03-01-2012 01:58 PM

well i finally got off my ass and ordered the remaining crap... I have a 4in aluminum shaft on the way, the shaft is setup as a 1350 in the front and a 1350/stocker bastard joint in the rear. This way i can swap it in then later on down the road when i redo the gears I can get a 1350 pinion yoke and 1350 ujoint...

I also order some AN couplers to extend the cooling lines.

The swap will take place next weekend!!!!

Driveshaft came in today. It is a 4in .120 aluminum. It is roughly 58.5inches center to center... It if very nice and it is soooo freaking light.. The guy said it should be good up to 7200, so i think i am good togo with whatever direction i take.. 7200 in 3rd with the TC locked is pretty stinking fast alot faster than i would like togo in a truck
