Little update:

Everything is ready to come out -- just the motor mounts left. Front of the trans is being supported by my tranny jack until I get the motor out and can make a more stable solution. I need to assemble my crane and stand and pull the bastard out of there.

Went a bit slower than expected, namely because my company has two huge demos to do in Seattle next week, and since Rex told me he doesn't need my stuff until next week most likely, I re-prioritized. I'll get it pulled tomorrow and cannibalized for Rex.

Pics a bit later on my solution to pulling the PS pulley.

I know there is at least one more elec. connector I have to pull, but I can't get it off with the engine in (it's the ground on the back of the block next to the 12 o-clock tranny bolt -- I can't get both a wrench and my big stupid hand back there at the same time).

Anyway, gotta get back to the 5-year birthday party before the house full of screaming 4 and 5 year olds (and more importantly, the beautiful 33 year-old) realize I'm gone

Pulling the engine out:

90% ready, fans out for easiocity

My solution to the powersteering pump pulley problem:

A/C compressor out of the way:

Opps... Truck's too high!!

Solution was to drop the driver's side front jack stand one tooth and center the leveler.

So I guess you are no longer an STS salesman?

Now, the tranny is lonely

How it came out:

Shot for reference: bell housing bolt pattern, back of the block bolt holes, flex plate, rear cover

DS bank cylinders:

DS MLS gasket...

PS bank cylinders:

guess I forgot that side head...

The infamous crank pulley bolt - with the heads already off... I did this for purely educational reasons. It's not like I forgot the crank bolt before taking off the belt, heads, etc... No. This was on purpose!

Here's what I did:
1) wedge a long wrench between the A/C bracket and the pulley:

2) break my breaker bar, discover my compressor sucks *** and can't spin my big impact wrench

cheap *** breaker bar...

3) use my big torque wrench set to 140ft/lbs

4) heat the crank bolt with a heat gun
5) pull like a mother fu-- urm. Pull hard.
6) laugh about the bent "wedge wrench" and broken breaker bar...

Getting the pulley off -- I used a big gear puller with the jaws facing out:

ignore the "wedge wrench" in that shot, it was kinda stuck...

Nice little cam trick:
1) pull the cover
2) pull the oil pump (and remember to flip the motor over and remove the oil pump pickup tube or it won't come out)
3) remove the timing chain
4) remove the cam retainer plate
5) reinstall the timing chain cam cog

6) use the timing chain cam cog as a handle

STS makes a great product -- I think they need to do some longevity work with their electronics and I think they need a better solution for the PCV system, but bear in mind, I'm using prototype kit parts, and have been since 2003 -- not bad when you look at it that way.

If I still lived in a hot climate and drove this everyday (or if I wasn't at the end of my rope with breakage before i get to have any fun on this truck), I'd be working on an electronic solution for them rather than moving on After hanging around with Moog5050, I also want a bit more bling in the engine compartment!

I think everyone will admit I pushed the STS idea pretty far beyond the "stock bolt" on I prototyped for them hehe.

Last one for today:

Cam bearings:

This is the only debris in the top end, and it might be junk from having the valley cover off while pulling the motor:

All the journals are still nice...
