BlackGMC build take 2 - Turbo Time
#365
Hey Corey.. Just noticed you posted in Richards build that your EGT probe was post turbo... You need it pre turbo!! As close to the inlet of the hot side as possible. You're not doing much good where you've got it honestly. The exhaust will cool some as it goes thru the turbine giving you a false reading. You need it where you would be concerned about potential damage. It's almost like sticking your hand in boiling water after you already knew it was hot... Kinda late at that point!
Anyway, just a public service announcement. Didn't want to clutter up his thread.

I installed it post turbo because i was worried that the probe may melt or break off and destroy the turbo. I dont really use it for wot tuning. Mainly i use it to help with setting cruise timing.

If that's all you do with it, it'll be close enough to see what you're doing. We run thermocouples in the exhaust ports of out Cat Natural Gas engines on ultra lean burn stuff (in the mid 30's:1 AFR) with exhaust temps routinely in the 1400deg range for days on end and I've never seen one break off and get in a turbo. You do have a relevant concern there though. It has crossed my mind before with these things too, may be worse on a vehicle due to the heat cycling. On our junk, it's pretty much just sustained heat.
