Same thing. one is just bigger. but yes you are right it is a solenoid. There should be four posts total on the solenoid, two small two large. One large will have power all the time, one small will be ground the other positive, one the small curcit is energized, the other large post will have power.

ok i fixed the problem and it was the glow plug silenoid
now when she started up the motor makes a serious ticking sound and it gets worse when i rev it up a little could it be lifters or rocker arms???
its definately not a knocking sound its more of a ticking and its up top some where

it really sounds like a lifter or a rocker arm ticking sound...
is there any kind of problem with the valvetrain that you have ever heard of before or do you think that it could be something else???

nothing common on those. they were pretty bulletproof. hard to tell without actually hearing it.
