Whats up guys, I just picked up this 2006 4.8 4x4 for $2500 with 31k real miles on it. Its a one owner truck that spent its life on a concrete plant as a yard truck so looking at it you wouldn't really assume its a low miles truck. Im 17 and this is my 3rd car (my other two were jeeps and i got tired of 10mpg and not being able to jump out in traffic). my plan with it is to drop it (probably 4/6) and do a cam and single turbo along with painting it and replacing pretty much everything and i look forward to everyone's input on this project. I plan on getting a 78/75 from vs racing and custom fabbing the piping for the turbo at my buddies muffler shop. as of now I think I know how I want everything in my head except for gearing im leaning towards 3.23s and 28s i think being that it is mostly just a daily that will do some street digs in 4hi and a occasional rolling burnout. Any way all input is appreciated (yes i know its ugly)
You know how silly it sounds that a 17 year old wants to cruise on the freeway at 90+ mph. A lot of parents would smack you for saying that.
He's being serious, if you want a fun truck with a 4 speed transmission that can only use 3 gears for fun, you will want something way better than 3.23's. It going to suck down low because it has no gearing. Run 3.73's or 3.90's at a minimum.
Don't forget that the 4L60e is made of glass and will explode. Jump straight to a 4L80e if you want it to survive.

The 4l80e has an even high first gear so lower rear gears will be even more important.
Welcome! See the 07 in my sig. It was 5.3 rear mount with 4.10's and 32" tire. Only 8.5 lbs. It was a pig with 3.42's even with a converter. Dropped .64 in the 1/8 going to 4'10's and still comfortably cruised at 80. Don't do 28's do 29's if you want and 3.73's for same gearing as me. Maybe 3.90's for more dig. Even a built 4l60 will give repeated problems like every few months so don't waste your money. 4l80 and a nice converter with above setup. These guys know there **** so listen up.
Sorry I took so long to reply I have been busy with work and school but i have been doing some forum surfing and it looks like the best thing for me to do it jest sell my 60e and I should be able to get a decent bit for it because pf the low miles even thought its just a 60e and go straight to a 80e. what do you guys think about converter size on a daily? some places are saying it doesn't really matter and others are saying a 3500 stall will be un drivable on a daily. I think a a stage 2 btr, 78/75 and a 3500 stall should work nicely together.
As for the gears: everything about a vehicle is compromise, sacrifice A for B and X for Z and so on.
I wouldnt have my heart set so hard on saving MPG at 90mph to burn all those savings stop light to stop light.
You will spend 80% or better of your time in that truck going light to light. Gear the damn thing.
I have 4.10s now and I can't wait to go to 4.56. 4.88 if I go with 35" tires. Gear is good. Gear makes up for a lacking cam or converter. Gear makes everything easier
one final note, LS motors don't mind revving. Bet that girl get betters MPG at 3300rpm than your Jeep 4.0 gets at 1800.
Closing thoughts? Gear it.
And slow down

I run 3.73 gears in my moser 9" with a 30" drag radial and 4l80e. I wish i had more gear in it for sure!! I will probably tear mine down here soon and swap to a lower set.
In my jeep i run 37s and 4.88s and like 2600 rpm at 70 and yeah the mileage is pretty horrendous. I wasn't really thinking about it like that but you’re right that it will spend most of its time going from light to light so i guess 4.10s are the way to go. last night i got it up on the lift and got a picture of the bottom of the truck with the concrete and i pulled the bed then started pressure cleaning and it actually cleaned up better than I thought it would.
