Gm subbed out the heads in 03-06 I believe to a company called castech. Not all trucks got the castech heads though. But anyway they are known for cracking and seeping coolant around the head bolts. Typical symptoms are noisy lifters and smoke on start up and fluctuating oil pressure. My truck had bad intermittent smoke on start up since 76,000 miles. I was running mobil1 since I got it at 16,225 miles. So I put new plugs and wires on it and kept running it and changing the oil at 3000 miles. Then the lifters started sounding off and wouldn't go away for a min or so and not a quiet tick this sounded like a pissed off rattle snake lol. Pulled the covers and found peanut butter. So With 94,135 miles I ripped the 5.3 out and dropped in a crate LQ4 with a 3 yr 100,000 mile warranty.

I despise castech
