The Wife's new ride - UPDATE: NEW SERVICE TRUCK
Since my wife's car is now out of commission, and Geico refuses to fix it, I had to do something about it. I have already met my personal repair limit on the car, so I wasn't going to put a $1,500 cloth top on t.
We have been looking since Friday for another vehicle. I found an ad for a 99 Suburban with no number. I was hesitant to contact him because it was past the limit I wanted to pay. I finally just decided to screw it and sent him an email. He called me back about 8 hours later. I explained my situation to him and told him flat out the limit I was working with. He was quiet for a few, then said come on. I came home with this after a hour and a half drive one way. http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...eatherssub.jpg http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...0911-00196.jpg http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...0911-00195.jpg http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...atherssub2.jpg It needs one of the rear barn doors adjusted, a/c system has a leak some where, front seats are wore out, the trim around the inside door handle on the drivers door is missing, the fender flares need to be painted, and the fuel gauge doesn't work. It has new tires, runs and drives like a new truck, fully loaded LT. And all for less then what I could have fixed the Lincoln. |
Nice Score!

The interior is perfect except the trim on the door and the front seats. He even had floor mats over the original floor mats. I think my buddy might have some good front seats for it. I have so little investment in it, that I have plenty of room for repairs without getting upside down in it. |
how much ?

The Lincoln needs the top and hood repaired. That is about $2200 worth. |
Not bad but I hope she doesn't drive it very far. That thing probably gets pretty horrid gas mileage
|
I have 1 just like it and to be honest i rather drive the burban then my truck...lol mpg aint to bad on them...,imo

My Dads 99 burban gets 15 around town and 19 highway, i wouldnt call that horrid, and its roomy and comfortable. Nice score Bud!!!!! I love suburbans, that one is clean! 1500 !!! YOU STOLE IT!!!! |
Yeah, they get reasonable mileage. The last one I had like this got 19MPG, so not unreasonable. She only drives around 6,000 miles a year, so it isn't major issue as long as it isn't in the single digits.
My 94 Suburban is slightly tweaked and has gotten a consistent 24 MPG until I started fighting EGR issues. It is getting around 18 MPG with it now. Given that I plan an engine swap down the road, and the 350 in it is knocking, I am not going to worry with it right now. |
I took the suburban down to my buddies garage and had him go through it thoroughly. He spent 2 hours checking everything he could. He found a worn out sway bar end link that is rattling and an oil leak that is nothing more then moisture forming. He said the leak isn't even forming a single drop.
Pretty impressive for a $1500 4x4 truck. |
OK, the wife wants me to do something to change the ride around a little bit, and given that it is in such good shape for my investment I figure I can do a little to it as I go.
In 99, they didn't make a Z71 Suburban, only the Tahoe. Since it needs a new back bumper and some body work anyway, I think that will be the direction I go with it. A simple and clean Z71 clone. I think my buddy has a set of the Z71 Tahoe wheels. Some color matched bumpers, grille, and fender flares call it good. Maybe throw some 285/75R16's on it after a key swap. She will love it. |
Went in to register the wife's ride this morning. They gave me a fit because the purchase price was so cheap. Even though I had a state legal bill of sale with signatures on it, they still gave me problems.
So they put on the registration that I traded the lincoln for it. Whatever, at least I didn't have to argue with them anymore. |
sweet dude!

Went out to work on the computers at a local salvage yard today. I was talking to him about finding me some grey leather buckets, and how I really wanted some out of a Denali. What do you know, he just bought a rolled 99 Denali. It had the right color interior. I am getting the front buckets, the front console, the rear bench, and all related wiring.
It needs to be cleaned up, and the drivers seat has a tear, but all in all, pretty happy about finding it. |
The truck started running really really badly. Wouldn't accelerate, etc etc.
We put it up on the lift and found that it had the stock original fuel filter still on it. You can really tell that 99 was the last big bang for the vortec 350. It feels WAY more powerful then my 94, it is almost funny. In 99, they kicked the output up to 255HP, I guess to level the field with the new 5.3L that was just coming out. |
Vortec 350 was a good engine. Wish I had gone with that (stock replacement style) goodwrench motor for $400 more compared to my goodwrench weezer.
|
The vortec's liked to pop intake gaskets. Other then that, they are pretty solid.
|
I'd be running a carb intake anyway. Roller cam, one piece rear seal, power, etc.. Would've gained alot. I have the plain 250 horse one with bolt ons in my c10. It sucks
|
my 94 was only rated at 190 hp, talk about suck
|
Heather wants the suburban to look like an offroad truck. I was out at the salvage yard the other day as they were getting a tahoe in. It had a rusted up chrome brush guard on it. Since it was rusted up, they let me have it. The even pulled it off for me.
I lost the picture of it when I got it home. Tonight I tore it all apart, tossed the strangely shaped headlight guards in the crap pile, and attacked the remaining pieces with a 36 grit flap wheel. Followed that with a 80 grit flap wheel. Hung it up and sprayed it with some rust to primer stuff. http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...0418-00604.jpg Gonna spray it with some bed liner and then mount it on her suburban. I am going to mount the big lights off my brown truck on it. http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...0226-00276.jpg |
My wife is pregnant. She came out in the shop and said she wanted the brush guard to be grey rather then black, so I quit working on it and was going to order some grey bedliner. 4 weeks or so pass, and now she wants it back black.
Guess I will get back to it, sooner or later |
Nice looking Sub and you certainly can't beat the price. Good luck with it.
|
Thanks, it has been a good one.
|
My wife decided she wanted a BIGGER vehicle. She now has a conversion van.
I am working out of the 99 now. Since I have been driving it I have done a little work. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...20229632_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...50189252_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...98749140_n.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...77840769_n.jpg from this https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...12970685_n.jpg to this https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...97069903_n.jpg to this https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...41693311_n.jpg tinted the windows https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...70711863_n.jpg It also received a full replacement walker exhaust, but the muffler was upgraded to the Walker SoundFX. Has a nice rumble to it, but still quiet. Added a Stainless tip. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...46184991_n.jpg Pretty soon I won't be able to post any more picture of it on here anymore. My companies logo's will be going on it, so the pictures will violate site rules. |
Spray can of bedliner, 2 cans of trim paint, masking supplies, new bulbs, all new black front lights
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...70782582_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...01701973_o.jpg Swapped the black bumpers over from the 94 suburban, painted the grille with trim paint, painted the fender flares with bedliner to cover pitting, then trim paint on top of the bedliner Also got my exhaust installed today. This was the left overs from the 94 as well. Magnaflow Y-pipe to bring the dual 2 inch pipe into a single 3, Borla XR1 round, 3 inch to 4 inch flare, v-band clamp, 4 inch tailpipe. The reason for the 4 inch tailpipe was I had 2 option for good fitment, cheap 4 inch or 3xpensive 3 inch magaflow. I chose the 4 inch. Love the sound. Sound clips to come. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...78322439_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...32767429_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...80102082_o.jpg |

Ordered some stuff for the console. With all the parts I am removing from the inside of the console, I decided to add some back in that will help with work. I am installing a power inverter to charge my drills/laptop, putting some USB ports in to charge cell phones and what not.
Mini ATM Fuse Tap Add on Dual Circuit Adapter Auto Car Auto Terminals | eBay Blue Sea 1016 12V DC Socket with Two USB Charger Ports 5V 2 1A Output | eBay Schumacher 410 Watt AC DC Car Battery Power Inverter Converter 2 Outlets XI41B | eBay I had ordered some H3 HID lights to go in the lights on the front bumper, and they won't fit my lights. The bulbs are too long. So I ordered some cheap housings. 2X Universal 6" Six inch 4x4 55W Off Road Light Truck Driving Fog Black Lamp | eBay I am also going to experiment with these and see if they will be bright enough to work as an auxilary backup light. 2X Bolt on Screw 3W LED Eagle Eye Backup Light Fog Driving Lamp Car Motorcycle | eBay I dropped this off at my buddies garage. He is going to get it put on next week. Skyjacker Suspensions Steering Stabilizer White Red Boot Single Chevy GMC Kit | eBay |
That burban has come along way. Looks pretty good too. There a nice sold SUV I've had a couple of the older tahoe's there great. GL with the new additions.

Thanks
We have been trading around with the vehicles, and I had intended to sell this suburban, but the thing won't die. I figure if it is going to refuse to die, I will put it to work. |
You might want to try an Epoxy product to hold the panels in. Something like Plastic welder from Devcon
We used to use Devcon 22045 S-220 to bond panels like that and fill over the top with fiberglass filler then wrap or paint the item. |

We used to use Devcon 22045 S-220 to bond panels like that and fill over the top with fiberglass filler then wrap or paint the item. I picked up some wood at Home Depot this weekend to build my pocket for the inside of the console. Hopefully will get that knocked out today. |
Got the box and trim panel built. Let's just say it will serve my purpose perfectly as desired, and is well mounted in there.

No pictures, but got my Skyjacker Nitro 7000 steering damper installed. First time that I have ever liked driving one of these with the adaptive steering.

The power inverter came in today. We were looking at how we might mount it in the console but have it accessable from the outside. While we were looking at it, I decided I better test it. When I grabbed the ac/dc interter, there was another dc/ac inverter sitting beside it. We hooked that dc/ac inverter up to find it only had 90 volts output. So we tore it apart and I am use the panel from it in the side of my console. It has all the functions I need built into it. We went to lunch and started talking, and Dad suggested adding an extra cooling fan in the console just to help with the heat. I went through my box of old computer fans and found a powerful one that was very quite at full speed.
I haven't pulled the tape off the side of the console yet as I still need to paint the top of the panel that I cut down. https://sphotos-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...75653991_n.jpg https://sphotos-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...43989226_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...16977262_n.jpg |

The USB charging ports came in today. It was smaller then I thought it would be. I had planned to mount it in the console, but I didn't want it on the sides or an where something could be dropped in it. I decided to remove the cigerette lighter from the panel from the bottom of the dash and install it there. All I had to do is drill the hole out slightly larger, and change the wire ends fro, the lighter. All is well and it works beautifully.
There has been a buzz from the bottom of the dash I couldn't find. While trying to figure out how to remove the outlet panel from the bottom of the dash the mounts all broke. I decided that rather then gluing it in like it was from the factory, I would like to be able to remove just this panel. I used some of the extra screws from the console to hold it in place. https://sphotos-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/h...01136921_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...93052921_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...53763938_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...83389653_n.jpg https://sphotos-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/h...14876103_n.jpg https://sphotos-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/h...83360066_n.jpg I also got my 9w LED lights I am likely going to mount in the back bumper for backup lights. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...17645514_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...47140308_n.jpg |
So a 285/70r17 will fit back in the stock location. Kinda...
