Two step is like a rev limiter that cuts spark to different cylinders to maintain a certain rpm limit you specify. If you have a transbrake which locks the transmission you can set a two step to hold a given rpm at the line while you have the gas pedal to the floor. That way you can leave at the same rpm everytime and already be at WOT when you disengage the brake and two step. Makes for more consistant launches. You could also do it with just the normal brake pedal but, then the two step couldn't be set any higher than what the brakes could hold.

Since it cuts spark to cylinders the fuel from those cylinders goes into the exhaust where it will burn so you don't want to use one with cats in the exhaust. The load it creates and extra heat in the exhaust will help boosted guys build boost on the line also.

Anti lag works differently and was explained above.

Actually, 2step is a short for a 2 stage rev limiter with a lower rev limiter for launching and a higher rev limiter for engine protection. Anti-lag, is different then a 2 step, but can be used with the 2 step. When anti-lag is active on the lower setting of the 2 step, the timing is retarded ALOT and extra fuel is dumped in at the same time so the overly rich mixture is ignited late and most of the burn is done after TDC which send REALLY HOT exhaust gases to the turbo spooling it very quickly without physically loading the vehicle.

A 2 step rev limiter alone will help spool a turbo, but combined with anti-lag it will do it much quicker and higher PSI, but is VERY hard on turbos. Some people have equated it to spooling a turbo with a sledgehammer

Ouch blew his motor/turbo and broke his windshield. He can put that in his "One of those shitty days" column.
