I'd leave the stock heads on actually. If you're going to take them off, just invest $300-400 into a good port and polish of your stock heads. Have them suckers milled down as much as you're comfortable with to bump compression a tad, and the head work will improve flow and throttle response. The 317 heads are awesome, and the intake runner size is perfect for a 6.0L. I'd use what you have and go from there.

Personally I'd go with LS6 243 heads. It will raise up your compression significantly and help out a lot with low end torque

This is generally the way to bolt on extra power. However there is a gray area that depends on how well the 317's are worked over at the machine shop. Head work done on 317's will outflow stock 243's all day long idle-6500 rpms. If you figure 243's are $400 brand new for stock, $400 invested into a "stage 1" job will yield better results out of the 317's, hopefully, if the machine shop is good at what they do.

good point. For me though I'd get new heads. I have part of an exhaust bolt that broke off stuck in one of my heads

I was just going to use the Dart heads since I had them. I have a friend that wants the LQ4 heads to put on a stock bottom end LS1 since the 72 cc chamber would drop the
compression really nice for a boost application that he has planned

There is no point in porting and milling the 317's when you already have the darts. The Darts have a 62cc comb. chamber compared to the 317's 72cc comb. chamber. . If you're gonna port anything go with the dart's. They also make good power out of the box.

These cams listed is to small for the 6.0 they are more for the 5.3 and 5.7. You could step the cam up and get a towing converter and still be able to tow and notice a difference in the trucks power. A comp224/224 with a 3000 stall would be good combo. This is my old setup and was my daily driver and did fine. The cam sucked without the stall. The stall was really tight so I kept my steetabilty. It was a TCI 3000 it only brake stalled to 2800. Even without a cam I would run a stall. Thats the biggest improvement you can get for the money.

i'm with inchup for most everything, if your pulling and towing stuff go with a mild cam, i'd say a little bigger then the 210-212, something like a 216/220 or a cheatR cam from tr. but i wouldn't use the darts for that build. its your decision, but i would see about selling or trading them if your not going to use them on your 408.

I would think the Dart heads would only produce more power than stock. The 10cc drop in chamber size would increase your compression more than 1 full point. They may change the characteristic a bit, but the cam really decides the powerband.

I was thinking the same thing about running the Dart heads. The only thing that bothers me is the 225 cc runners giving up too much lower end. If the head will work fine with the cam I have then I will keep it, and run maybe a 2600-2800 stall. The cam I have is on the small side from what I think a 6.0 could run. I rarely tow with the truck, but I bought it for that purpose so I want it to do that well.
