Which is easier, all things considered, time, labor, pita factor etc., to pull the motor on a 01 silverado, or to pull the heads in truck? I need to replace a rod i believe, and looking at the room, and wires and such, it looks pretty tight in there...

If it's 4wd, I'd pull it.

2wd it would be pretty easy to get to the bottom side, but take a look at your passenger side firewall clearence on the head.

It's a 2wd, but I am pretty sure it's on the driver side... I think it will be pretty easy to get the pan off and see what exactly needs to be fixed, but i'm not sure about getting the head off to put the piston/rod back in... would it be possible to get it out and back in through the bottom?

If your rod is busted, how is your block? After seeing it done, I would just jerk the motor. It would be way easier. Just get it on the stand and make your corrections then reinstall if you can. A motorswap isnt that bad and i would do that as opposed to trying to do it under the truck. If you have access to a lift that might be a different story.

As far as I know, the rod isn't busted, it's just bent... Ingested water, and you can turn the motor over and it will just lock down, then turn it the other way and it will go almost a whole turn and do the same thing... I dont have access to a lift, but neither do i have a garage, so it will be all in the driveway(gravel) on jackstands...

Pulling a motor on gravel beyond sucks unless you have a chain hoist to hang from a tree or a tractor with a boom to pull it. A cherry picker on gravel would not be fun.

Another reason why pulling your motor might be worth it...

If the rod is bent, how are your cylinder walls?
