Default Torque Curve

What can i do to pull a little bit more mid range power from my build? I have a strong low end 1k-2.5k and and strong upper end 4.5k-6.5k.... I just would like a little more mid range - list of mods 2001 silv. ecsb 5.3 0.20 over 230/236 .610/.610 110lsa degreed in to 104, 799 heads p&p cnc'd shaved to 56cc, LT headers, High flow see through cats, no muffs, 90mm TB w/spacer, stock intake ported to match up, CAI, 2500 stall, built 4l60e, 3.73 spooled rear, un-tuned... I am pricing out tunes local but dont like the people looking for expierienced tuners within 3-4 hours of SE Alabama All $0.02 welcome!

First thing I would get it tuned. I am surprised that you are saying it doesn't have the midrange power that you want with it being bored over with that cam and heads.

If you honestly feel like it needs more ***** try different gearing 4.10's or higher, but you will prob lose a little top end if you go more than 4.10. Shouldn't matter anyway as you have a truck and its not a race car looking to do roll races at 130mph or higher lol.

A higher stalling converter would give you more low and mid range power as well, but you said it already has plenty of low end.

Choices, choices its up to you man. Others can chime in and maybe give you more info.

I was going to say either port the intake or get a TBSS intake until I saw that you ported the stock intake.

a GOOD tune would probably make a big difference but it seems like the the torque curve is flat until around 4000 and has a strong pull from there up and i was wanting more of a smooth arc all the way through... and the ported intake is just like a match port job instead of fully ported... i have been looking for a TBSS and i cant seem to find many

Eh, you think you have a good low end but in reality you dont spend any time there with your higher stall torque converter. After its flashed up to 2500 (which is where you say you lack power) your cam still hasnt reached its operating range, which you said starts at 4000. So yea, clearly there is a big gap between 2500 and 4000, but you answered your own question there. You can either get a looser stall to bring the engine closer to the cam operating range quicker, or a smaller cam to bring its operating range down some. I vote for the smaller cam. A 230/236 is pretty big on a 5.3, hell my cam in my 410 was that size and I thought it was too big. A tr220 would be a good choice given your mods.

I agree, having been there, done that, your cam is pretty big for a 5.3. You really need a bigger stall. You will never see a lot of low end and midrange from that cam in a 5.3.......

That is a pretty big cam for his truck. If it were mine and that cam was already installed in the engine I would get at least a 3600 converter, but not everyone wants a 3600-4000 converter in their truck. I have seen much worse cases though, where they get a cam that size on a stock 5.3L do no head work period, run 3.42 gearing, stock converter, stock trans. If you just get a nice 3600 converter I think you would be happy though. You have a built trans so you should be fine.

What atomic said about a smaller cam is actually true (a smaller cam would be better for your current mods), unless you plan on installing a 3600 converter. HIgher stalling converter + better gearing would make it a blast though, but that is more $$$$. If you decide to just get a smaller cam that is a better combo for your mods then you wouldn't really need to spend more money on converter and gears.

yeah.. im thinking the 230/236 cam is a bit too big for the little 5.3... i had a 224/228 xer cam in my 5.3 and it put down 352/344 through a unlocked 3200 converter.

I agree the cam is on the big side for that size motor to be making a ton of mid range power. I also think that cam will pull hgiher than 6500...

All that and its untuned right now? How does it even run well? with a tune there will be a HUGE difference throughout the entire RPM range.

In this case with so many custom parts its best to find a GOOD local shop. There has to be someone within ear shot that specializes in LSx engines.

How far are you from Baton Rouge LA??
Engine Power Systems, 2010 Camaro Parts, 2010 Camaro Accessories, LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7, LS9 Dyno Tuning, Custom LSX Camshafts, Baton Rouge Louisiana

This guy/shop knows his stuff!!! I have a feeling for what you want he will recommend a different cam as well. I shift mine at 6300 with plenty of top end in my 6.0 and I only have a 222/226 from them. People with similar cams in a 5.3 are pulling to 6600 and higher.

I also ran a 13.8 without a converter in my crew cab 4x4... im going for a 13.2 or better once i get the converter in there. Impressive in my book for a daily driver.

I will agree with others saying the cam is too big for the ci in a truck application.

A good local tuner in Mobile is James Parker with Running with the Devil. He is only in town one week a month for tuning but if you can get scheduled in, it will be done right. You can email him at dynotune at rwtd dot com.
