Spec me a cam 06 LQ9 4x4 ECSB
I just want a cam with to increase mileage on highway or at least keep it close to stock mpg and some chop at idle that's noticeable, this is my DD, but I want to have some fun at track on occasion.
I have some Kooks LTs 1 7/8, Kooks Y pipe, 3" electric cutout, corsa touring muffler, EFI Live tuned once I get cam in. And a SLP 160 Stat. Did the Airaid filter and Tube to stock box. The trans is a 4L70e, I plan to get a Circle D 278mm 3000 or a Yank TTS 3000. Truck has 70K miles, so I will do both servos, and Transgo Kit with TC at install. Also, bought a Tru Cool 40K cooler to keep temps down. The factory gears are 4.10s front/rear. Stock tire size(265/70/17), but plan on going to a 285/70/17 for less rpms on highway for mpg. (32.8in) I tow a double axle trailer on occasion for work and a 27 FT CC boat on some weekends to ramp. Use the 4x4 when I go hunting to get to the camp, or at the track. I have used the search button, but theirs some many options on cams, I'm trying to narrow it down with people's cam they use in the same application. I'm thinking a: 1. 224/228 2. 224/226 3. TR224 114 LSA 4. 228/228 .588/.588 on 112 LSA 5. 212/218 6. 216/220 561/.581 lift 113 LSA 7. 220/112 8. 232/236 .585 lift on a 112 LSA 9. Your cam and advice? Thanks for the help. I have no experience with cams, just FYI. |
220/224 on a 112 LSA.
I think I'm about the only one that has done a cam swap and gotten better mileage on the highway, but it was also coupled with a head swap, compression increase, and full exhaust all done at the same time. I went from about 16.8-17 to ~19 5.3 with a 216/220 .525/.532 114 LSA. 243 heads, Longtubes into Xpipe true dual exhaust. |
Cam swaps and mileage done tent to jive too well... at least not with what you are looking for.
If you wanted mileage I would not have enough overlap to hear it and I would jack up DCR. I have been in your exact shoes and the cam I have if pretty damn close to what I would want doing it over. It has enough chop to know its not stock, but its not obnoxious by any stretch of the imagination. I do like a little bit of an exhaust bias with the 317 heads and about -4ish overlap in something that will get driven frequently. You do have great headers though which helps. 221/226 113+3 that cam will show you a strong 6200 shift point in your truck. It wont kill mileage... but it also definitely wont help it. On the highway it will be the same for sure. |

Add in some PAC 1218 springs and 7.4 Comp magnum Pushrods at cam install?
And new set of GM LS7 Roller Lifters Part# 12499225 too($98)? or Just do the COMP Cams GM LS1 LS3 LS7 Retro-Fit Rocker Arm Trunion Upgrade Kit #13702-KIT ($129) |
Texas speed is having a good cam deal right now and you can order custom cams.
|
I would suggest either a 220R-112 or the 224/228-114 if you want a choppier idle.
|
Just got a deal and picked up some 243 heads off an 02 Vette. Now I have to re-think the cam since my compression will be a 11.1.1
Decisions Decisions |
You won't need to change much. I would go slightly bigger with the duration and push the intake timing out a little... it will fatten up the mid and upper RPM power while the compression bump will help a lot down low.

Talked to Geoff @ EPS earlier today, told him my stuff and use, looks like a EPS Cam Swap Package with LS 222/226 .597/.598 113 LSA
He recommended since I tow some and DD, not to be too aggressive on split. You guys agree? I think with the LS6 heads it will flow nice. Thanks for the advice and steering me in right direction. |
