quick question about cams
#1
Can I drop a C6 vette cam in my 5.3 and drive it without a tune or will it run horribly? I'm coming from a car that would have had the ability to "learn" a cam swap like that. I'm just wondering if the truck would have enough play in the tune to run a standard C6 cam.

Kretty, if you are not wanting to do all the supporting mods for the tsp220 cam in your other thread, I would recommend the comp 212/218 low lift cam and you can get away with the stock converter and use cheap LS6 springs. I wouldn't do all that work for a LS6 cam without a tune on top of it..
Just get a 212/218 cam with hardened pushrods, LS6 springs and get a Custom Tune and go from there.

If you plan to do a cam then plan to do the supporting mods, if you don't want to get it tuned etc. then don't mess with it. Trying to do just the cam is not worth it, if its not tuned then the gains will be minimal and you run the risk of valve float with the weak stock valve springs.

The 212/218 would really be a great choice, it is a popular camshaft for a reason. It has an excellent powerband, and will make a noticeable increase in power.

Personally, if it was my truck and I had a similar situation, I would do the 212/218 "High Lift" in a kit with some .600" lift beehive springs, hardened pushrods, gaskets for the swap (timing cover gaskets, waterpump gaskets, front crank seal, and balancer bolt), and without a doubt get a tune! That would be the minimal needed to get you going, without having to sacrifice good useable power.

Thing is... The cam is free. I just need something to get me by til I can afford a decent setup. I've seen guys say ya can swap a Z06 cam in without a tune and it will run fine within the limits of the tune. I dunno, that's why I ask.

Hell, does anybody still have their stock cam? I'll paypal ya. My truck is undrivable, I just need to get it driving again. I don't care what I do, I just gotta get it back to daily status, I wanna do the 220r but when I have the money. It's going to be done this winter. I'm picking up another truck on the 28th so, I can park my 06 for the winter to tear her down, put the circle D, , intake, y pipe, exhaust, headers, and all the cam parts(pushrods, valve springs, cam, etc...) and stuff on... I just wanna get her rolling.
