Is a higher stall converter really that much better? Im on the same boat as the OP and am getting a circle D 3200 due to price.

The circleD 278mm is a nice budget friendly converter, but depending on your setup, goals, etc it will be a little tame like stated already. Especially if you go for a TSP228R or bigger cam the 278mm will be pretty tame.

A few other companies out there offer some good deals on converters a notch above the 278mm, but costs a little more money. A 10.5" or a 10" higher stalling torque converter which is a smaller diameter converter vs the 278mm can be had for around $500-$600.

FTI, Midwest, Edge racing converters has some pretty good deals, but you need to contact them. FTI could probably custom build you a 10.5" 3400-3600 converter non billet for not much more than the 278mm.

Thanks for the comments guys, i will report back with my results when the swap is done. As mentioned i will probally end up save a few more $ and get a bigger stall.
