What Type of 10-30???

I had the same problem every 2K miles mine would use nearly 2 quarts. This was at 80k Then I switched to the Valvoline High Mileage 10W-30 in my 00 5.3L. It hasn't burned a drop since the second oil change at 83K Im now at 138K. Doesnt leak either!!!

Old thread i know..

Been a while since i was on here..

Ok, so i have put about 3K on the truck so far.. added a quart twice..

So a quart every 1500...

Seems like alot to me..

This truck was owned by a contractor who used it as a commuter truck so i doubt that it was cared for to be totally honest..

Thinking about digging up parts for a rebuild in the summer..

Was wondering about bumping the compression up on this thing a bit, say to 10.5-10.8 (but need suggestions on where to go for pistons) going to get Blackbear to tune for 93, figure i might as well maximize it. Would like to add E85 functionality to it but want to be able to burn both, will look into the flex fuel convert.. anyway..

Want opinions on what to do to the heads for high mileage, I would presume.. seals mic the guides and relap the valves as well as new springs for whatever cam i choose.. the short block is standard stuff.. rings pistons bearings machine work...

the heads i am clueless on..

I am working on my own custom mid length headers.. STAINLESS..

going to do a trans rebuild at the same time so new convertor is in the works as well..

You might want to check the pcv system before tearing it apart.

Really? A quart every 1500miles caused by bad pcv valve?

There are several thing that could cause oil consuption like that on these LS motors. I was using 2 quarts every 2000 miles. The PCVsystem is one of the things that can cause the problem. There are other things you can try as well.

If you do a rebuild of your engine, the L33 uses the same flat top pistons as the 4.8L so if you have trouble finding for that speccific app then look under the same year 4.8L I believe there rated at around 10:1 already. You could mill the heads and bump the compression some if you would like.

Do they make higher compression pistons for the 4.8?

Not off the shelf that I am aware of. Weisco has forged pistons for the 5.3/4.8 bore but I dont beleive they have any thing higher. If they do, it will probally put you in the 12:1 range depending on which head you run.

The 5.3 with a factory -8cc dish piston and the 706/862 head is around 9.5:1 they claim the L33 with a the flat top 4.8 piston is 9.9:1 with the larger combustion chamber on the 799/243 castings.

You can mill the heads and use a thinner gasket to bump the compression. Or get the 706/862 heads and have them re-worked. SDPC has a ported 862 head that would probally complamint an L33 with a cam very nicely. I know Richard @ WCCH is working on something too It's just not finished yet.

Realistically if you plan to drive it on the street I don't see why you would want to get past 10.5:1.
