i know this is the wrong forum but i cant find help anywhere...
i have a 99 tahoe with a vortec 350..one of the piston rods broke off and instead of taking the time to rebuild it since its my only vehicle i bought an engine off a buddy of mine..
its a 350 out of a 78 k10
now i heard all i have to do is swtich the heads over and im fine..but at the same time the 78 engine block didnt have a know sensor or crankshaft sensor since they werent computer controlled...is this going to work..using the 78 block with my 99 vortec heads...please i need to know now before we finish this project this weekend

no. the 78 block will not work in your vehicle if you plan on using the fuel injection system. The computer uses the crank sensor for timing and advance and you can use vortec heads and intake on older blocks but can't use older blocks with the stock fuel injection.

You will need to use the Vortec front timing cover(which holds the crank sensor),crank reluctor.
Also the Vortec balancer is thinner to help fit the reluctor under the timing cover. Either use the Vortec balancer or throw the older balancer into the lathe and end face it slightly to accomodat the relcutor.
The Vortec timing cover will work on the older block, even though its got a different number of boltholes. the holes that are there do match.
Knock sensor can be mounted elsewhere on the block.

You will need a different flexplate as the 97-2002 305's and 350's are 1 piece rear main seals so they use different flexplates and starters.
The 87+ flexplate will have a counterweight, the older 1's wont, both use a neutral balancer.
If you take the entire 78 350 and flexplate I think you'll need a different starter than the Vortec 350 starter.
