Bit the bullet on a tex speed vvt-1 cam. Chevy dealer saying have to pull engine...2700 in labor lol....so is there a good write up somewhere for installing vvt cams? Ordered new pushrods springs etc too. Ive played aroind with heads on 4 stroke bikes but not acar/truck. Cant be too tricky?

Not to much different then putting a cam in any LS engine,

Pull the radiator
pull the balancer and water pump
Take the timing cover off.
take off your valve covers and pull the rockers (you are going to need to change springs also) I left the pushrods in so I could tell if lifters were staying up later on.
Take the bolt out of the cam phaser and pull phaser off. spin cam a few times to hold up lifters and then put dipsticks, dowels or something in the galley holes at 11 &1 oclock positions to hold your lifters up.... DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Now that all your lifters are up pull the cam out.

Installation is pretty much reversed, put the engine cyl 1 at top dead center and slip the chain around the phaser (sprocket) and line up the dots on the crank and cam sprockets. I am not sure off the top of my head if your cam came with it but use a standard bolt longer then your original (Bolt/ Valve) and thread into cam and pull it forward to meet the phaser. Its a little tricky if you dont do this and pin could miss the alignment hole by a few thousands (dont ask how I know cough cough had to buy new phaser, bolt and do the job a second time) Then install you NEW cam bolt and start putting things back together.

You definitely dont need to yank the engine.
Before install get Timing cover gasket set Felpro TCS45993 and it will have waterpump gaskets included, new cam bolt from dealer 12588151, crank bolt 12557840, I bought new valve cover gaskets, valve springs, pushrods, and coolant.

Tools that make life easier for install Dowels or similar to hold up lifters instead of playing Russian roulette , Harmonic balancer puller like OTC Tools 6667 - OTC Harmonic Balancer Pullers - Overview - SummitRacing.com, balancer installer, valve spring compressor specific for LS1 engines Trick Flow Specialties TFS-90306 - Trick Flow® Valve Spring Compressors - Overview - SummitRacing.com if you have a cathedral port heads (4.8/ 6.0) or Trick Flow Specialties TFS-90307 - Trick Flow® Valve Spring Compressors - Overview - SummitRacing.com for rectangle port heads (6.2) and a LARGE breaker bar to install cam and crank bolts along with a friend to hold the engine from rotating. Last but not least Beer.

I'm actually swapping out my vvt Cam today for a smaller custom grind. Anything you need pictures of?
