Default head and cam combo

im trying to put together i nice cam setup in my truck. The other day i talked to allan at nelsons performance and he suggested a comp xr cam 220 220 551 . I was personaly thinking or the xe-r lobe comp with that duration but it would be 581 lift. Allan said with the stock intake and head a 551 would be all the lift you would need. So a called Richard at wcch and he told me he like the xe-r lobes and suggested the stage 1.5 5.3 head with duel sping setup. do you engine guys think that is a good head and cam combo or will that be to much lift for the truck intake?

Listen to Richard and go with the more aggressive XE-R profile... If your restricted, what better thing is there to possibly do but add more lift? If your nose was clogged up, would you pinch your nostrils to HELP breathe? Probably not right? If your restricted, there needs to be a crutch... More valve lift would be a crutch to a restricted inlet.

Not to mention, we have the right valve train components available to control these lobes so reliability isn't as much of an issue.

FWIW, I agree; Richard has reported on the testing WCCH has done with these truck engines with some headwork. If your budget's up for it, go with Richard's suggestion. Good luck!

You can order any you want on any lobe seperation with as many degrees of advance/retard thru any of the Comp vendors.... Speed Engineering is having a sale as far as I know.

Here is a list of the XE-R lobes you can order directly.

.006'' duration, .050'' duration, .200'' duration, Lift w/ 1.7 rocker, Lobe #, profile
269 220 143 581 3720 xe-r
271 222 144 581 3721 xe-r
273 224 146 581 3722 xe-r
275 226 147 585 3723 xe-r
277 228 149 588 3724 xe-r
279 230 151 592 3725 xe-r
281 232 153 595 3726 xe-r
283 234 155 598 3727 xe-r
285 236 157 602 3728 xe-r
287 238 159 605 3729 xe-r
289 240 161 609 3730 xe-r
291 242 163 610 3731 xe-r
293 244 165 612 3732 xe-r
295 246 166 614 3733 xe-r
297 248 168 615 3734 xe-r
So, you can do a 220/248 or a 236/222.... on a 105LSA if you wanted... Up to you... Do some research and then decide for yourself.

I agree with nelson on this one I wouldnt go over .560 lift and I wouldnt go with a ported head for a cam in that range. If it were my choice I would mill the heads, do a valve job and put the cam in. That was my recipe and it netted me 13 sec 1/4, I have the exact same truck. My personnal favorite 5.3 cam is the LPE gt2-5

Look at the fastest NA 5.3 trucks and then look at how many run 12's with a cam only!!!!!!!! The stock heads do not need alot of work. Save your money spend it on exhaust and other bolt ons and an ls6 intake.

Edit: I just looked at your sig and I wouldnt go with a 4l80e, there are plenty of built 60e's that will handle 500+ rwhp. The 60e is better if you want to go fast.
