So in other words wait to buy the pistons until you have the block checked out. Some companies will not accept returns on Pistons at all. Others may charge a restock fee.

Phasemaster, if your comfortable with the price and the shops work, then go for it. Some of the required tools can easily cost the price they quoted you.
I kinda jumped the gun on the pistons since I told them I bought them they told me to bring them in to measure and sonic check it. The guy next door to them has a ton of ls stuff and builds them. When I asked him to give me a price on assembling the short block he said he only does complete engine because he warranties them. Come to find out I ask the machine shop next door who does all his machining if they can assemble it and told me they assemble all of the ls short blocks for the guy next door.

Well just got the short block back and everything looks good. Was wooried that the rotating assembly wouldnt be balanced since they had some one else do it. Check the crank and they added weight to it. Now only time will tell if they did a good job. my fingers are crossed.

Funny how that works isn't it.

It's not uncommon for some shops to send out the balancing. In some cases it can be time consuming and the average rebuild doesn't always need it. I am sure you will be fine.

We have independent balance shops out here too. We also have a guy that specializes in Rod reconditioning. These guys all do other stuff too.

I've had good luck here lately with machine shops doing exactly what's asked. Wasn't the case a few years back.

As far as the block not handling the overbore, some stock blocks will badly go over stock, however... We built a 5.3 block with 4.00 stroke and 3.910 bore not long ago, she was definitely a runner in a Miata with good heads/intake/camshaft setup with about 11.5:1 compression
