may need to pull timing, may be running lean. you can pull the spark plugs see what they look like, look into the spark plug holes with a bore scope and see what all the tops of the pistons look like.

It'll be fine. That's how I used to set the total advance on my distributors. Advance until it rattles under WOT then back off a ****'s hair. I've never had a motor blow up due to detonation

Using cheap gas? Was it fine on different brands of gas? Fine during the colder weather?

You can't really know that the engine is fine (without either pulling it apart or watching for symptoms over time), but if you reduce timing or run better gas and it stops rattling and makes no other noise, just watch for oil consumption etc.

oil consumption is fine.. i use 95 octane < .......... i guess it was better during coler weather.. ill reduce timing to get started ill see if that makes any difference maybe check on the plugs as well

Checking plugs for rich/lean conditions on any vehicle that run stoichiometric closed loop, is a TOTAL waste of time, unless you are checking for plug damage.
