advance or retard on cam

Default advance or retard on cam

like the title says my mechanic is doing the finally touches on the installation of the cam and he asked me @ what advance shuold i have it on.. its in a 2005 silverado 5.3
and the cam spex are 224/224 114* .578" lift
so were do u think it would be best??/

That depends on your heads, intake, exhaust system, and your goals.

If the cam is ground with 0 advance, +2 or +4 wouldn't hurt if you have an adjustable timing set. More advance=more low end power.

+1 at the cost of a little of the top end.

Here are my dyno graphs at 0*



and with 4* advance


damn that's hard to see, sorry but you can see the loss of 9hp and the gain of ~ 5lbs torque but the peak hp is quite lower in the powerband.

Did you swap cams or have an adjustable set? Which did you like the feel of more?

Only change was advancing it 4*. This was before I went FI. I liked it better with the 4* .
Those graphs are for the cam Danny is installing.

Since you have a relatively high lift cam, go ahead and do 4* advanced. It will help out with the low end that you are loosing from going with the high lift...

High lift is supposed to assist low end, not hurt it.
