6.0 to 8.1 engine swap.....can it be done?
#1
I have a 2002 6.0 engine with the 4l80e tranny, and I have a chance to obtain a 8.1 engine, and I'd love to be able to run the 8.1 with the 4l80e for performance.
Is it possible to run the 8.1 with the 6.0 PCM, and all the hardware bolt up?
I can program the PCM to the new 8.1liter information, as long as I'm not looking at trouble with the pick-up on the crankshaft, which I don't know the tooth count.
Can yall think of something that may cause this set-up not to run on the 6.0 PCM?
(I can tune for v/e, maf, engine displacement, injector sizing and that stuff)

i would think that the 6.0 would have more options for power in the future....most of the performance stuff for the 8.1 is custom made where as there is an abundance of 6.0 parts to build it up to whatever you want.....

For a given year model, the trucks use the same PCM with a different operating system and different parameter values. I know that you can reprogram a LS series car or truck PCM for the 8.1 (at least from 1999 through about 2003/2004).
A number of people have done the conversions and the 4L80E will bolt up to the 8.1 just fine. You will need a radiator from an 8.1 and there are a number of other changes. However, dollar for dollar, I don't think that you'll get as much bang for you buck as sticking with improving your 6.0. Also, the fuel requirements of the 8.1 will be greater.
Just my two cents,
Steve
