Which 370 forged rotating assembly??
#1
Sending my lq4 to the machine shop to upgrade to a forged 370.
My crank needs to be turned so i figured i'd just get a new crank. It would offset the cost and be less machine work.
Leaning towards compstar rods. Seems to be the go to rod for this type of build.
Using wiseco -3.2cc K398X3 pistons.
My goal is mid 9s full weight rcsb street truck. Looking to make 1000rwhp and possibly 1200 later down the road.
I have a few questions
Is a K1 worth getting over a stock crank? What other budget cranks are there?
Do i buy compstar rods or do i need to get a little better rod?
Not looking to go all out and spend a fortune but i do want it to hold up to the power it will see.

There are many people running 9's with sbe... I know i dont "need" aftermarket crank. If my crank didnt need to be turned id just use it. I figured just put that money towards a new one plus thats less machine work.
I may just have it turned though. Not trying to make this complicated lol

Turning it is what? $150?
An aftermarket crank that holds 900 is 700+. One that holds 1000 (Callies) is nearly 2k
2k buys a lot of turned stock cranks, and taking .01 off her wont hurt ultimate holding power. But she will fail at 1000hp, eventually

You tell me that i should get it turned. Then turn around and tell me that it will fail?....
i look at it like i would be getting $150 off of an aftermarket crank. Plus there wont be any questions as if the machine work was done right everytime i go beat on it.
plus (and i could be totally wrong) i have heard of it costing more to balance the cranks that had the "weak" gen 3 rods because it is a lighter setup to begin with.
This is my first built engine and i just want it done right is all.
I am not against using the stock crank completely. Just wanted to discuss my options with pros and cons first is all.

I got the 370 kit from TSP with K1 crank and rods, wiseco pistons. I'm very happy with all of it.
My motor has no power adders yet, but I have lofty plans of adding more power later. After reading all the good reviews on the K1 stuff, I'm confident it will hold up when I start pushing it.

Another thing to consider you didn't say but I'm assuming to make that kind of power it will be turbo? Turbo's are easier on a crank than Nitrous or PD blowers so with that in mind you probably would be ok at 1k. 1200 may be a different story. I'm not sure I would count on it being indestructible even if built stout because bad things happen. Pumps fail, injectors get plugged, bad gas blah blah blah. A forged crank would withstand more but a stocker can take plenty and like said above... plenty in the 9's.
Everything is chance so I would just consider your budget and see if $ may be spent better elsewhere. If you're good though with everything else...do it if you can. Example: in another post I told how I lost a forged 6.0 due to tune. My IDIOT tuner literally effed up a 1000 hp rated short block so it can be a crap shoot sometimes. Best of luck to you sir!

Yes turbo. Currently have s475 but upgrading to s476 or s480. I think im just going to go forged. Id rather spend the money now and not have regrets. I'm covered on the tune. Very reputable shop is building the short block and tuning. I was going to use a generic machine shop but now im using a lsx/ltx specealized performance shop. Gunna cost a bit more but it will be right!
