224R vs. 228R
#42
On older sbc and bbc's with flat tappet lifters, replacing cam and lifters was the only way to go, as the lifters would wear in to the camshaft, and shouldn't be re-used with other camshafts. Roller lifters are a different story though, and don't wear the way flat tappets do.

i have the ls2 cheatr cam (215 230 @ 630 593 lift on 117 lsa) from thunder racing and it almost sounds stock, but i think it has pretty decent power imo. it will spin my 31.5x10 from 35 miles an hour im sure theres others out there that are better, but the truck is very drivable. im thinking about going quite a bit bigger thinking about a lunati vodoo 227 232.. not that it is much help for you, just food for thaught...

there is nothing wrong with a texas speed/comp cam imo, i bought a 224/224 the cam in my sig to go in my rcsb 5.3 and i picked up great power prob around 35hp, alot of people told me my cam was too big for my motor but i disagree, it was good enough along with other mods to get my 5.3 into the 12's, being said i think a 224 would be an average size cam in a lq9 imo, if it were mine i would look at maybe a little bit larger cam to go in it maybe a custom grind 227/230 around .600 lift on both....good luck man hope you find the one you like
